Luby Sparks – Somewhere (Robin Guthrie Remix)

I must admit that the original version of Somewhere by Tokyo based Luby Sparks, which was released last month, did not do much for these ears. However I noticed it now has been given a make over by the Cocteau Twins Robin Guthrie so I delved in. Guthrie reduces the epic guitar sound of the original, concentrating on the vocals turning the song to into a blissful, ethereal classic. Dreampop? You bet! The Epigones – The Epigones

Inspired musically (and in the artwork too) by British post-punk bands such as Echo & The Bunnymen, The Sound and The Chameleons to name but a few the self titled debut from Ontario’s The Epigones is a mandatory listen. The songs highlight and showcase the incredibly strong vocals and the band’s guitar based sound. The way these come together both structurally and melodically is impressive to say the least. Just check these songs out and the way the guitars jangle themselves senseless on First Sunday of Your Vacation is particularity astounding to these ears. Anyone wanna buy a bridge? Blussh – Shut Up Becky!

The debut EP from Brisbane’s Blussh is a fast-paced, grunge and riot grrrl influenced EP. It’s not for the faint of heart as they come at you in droves with noisy and shouty tunes about sad girls, mental health and erm, a big dong – they are not short on humor and put-downs either. Not sure who Becky is but she had better shut up whilst I give this punk-pop frenzy another spin. That said it’s so loud I doubt I could hear her! Homepage Continue reading Blussh – Shut Up Becky!

Audiobaton – Where You Are

Where You Are by Dallas based Audiobaton is a fuzzy, distorted and noisy shoegaze EP. Alongside the obvious strengths that lie within the songs there are plenty of reference points such as Loop, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Darkside and My Bloody Valentine to name but a few. There are also more than a few nods in the direction of drone and to a lesser extent psychedelia. Songs such as Here and I’ll Run are excellent and should be on any discerning listeners shoegazing playlist but everything on this EP is worth a listen or five. Where You Are is … Continue reading Audiobaton – Where You Are
