Perfect Strangers – Unlikely Partners

Unlikely Partners is a collection of songs that flirt with the sounds of C86 and the jangle pop of the Paisley Underground. The band, who feature members of The Drums and Violens, deliver an album which doesn’t give us one standout track or wasted fillers but instead treats the listener to eight consistently strong songs. These include the short and poppy Deborah, the psychedelic-tinged Suds and the jangling Psychic Self-Defense. Entertaining stuff. Continue reading Perfect Strangers – Unlikely Partners

February Round Up #2

And the round up is on day two…. Patrick Farrugia – Too Late Patrick Farrugia has been releasing music for a few years now and the two tracks on Too Late is the first I have heard from him. Both tracks are 1980s-inspired or in the case of Oblivion 100% inspired by New Order’s Age of Consent such are the similarities between the two. Not bad then! Sadly less said about Olympiad the better. I am left wondering if it’s actually by the same person. Very MOR. Just grab the first track. Facebook Crystal Eyes/Marlaena Moore – Radical Softness – … Continue reading February Round Up #2

Foundlings – Enemy

Londoners Foundlings gear up for next months debut self titled EP release with a track taken from said EP. Enemy is another faultless track that builds up slowly before jangling it’s way to it’s conclusion. It certainly bodes well for that EP. None of the bands previous tracks appear on the EP which can be pre-ordered from here. The EP will be launched at London’s Sebright Arms on 2nd March 2019. Tickets available from here. Monnone Alone – Do It Twice

Monnone Alone is Mark Monnone, once of The Lucksmiths, and friends. New single Do It Twice is the second one to be lifted from the forthcoming album Summer of the Mosquito which is due out in May this year. It’s a fuzzy jangling indiepop song that harks back to the glory days of Flying Nun and according to the blurb is an ode to second chances and graciously sabotaging life’s opportunities – just for kicks!. It’s available on 7″ via a number of labels. Check the band’s bandcamp page for your nearest label. Continue reading Monnone Alone – Do It Twice

Taking it one track at a time

Rei Clone – Lavender Lavender is the third single to be lifted from the forthcoming album Greetings From Somewhere. It’s more noise from these Texan shoegazers and this track reminds me a bit of early Lush. Roll on that album. Facebook The Reds, Pinks & Purples – Dead End Days (demo) Is there any more I can add about the The Reds, Pinks & Purples in addition to what I have written about them already? I thought not so I will let the music speak for itself and to be fair it’s doing a damn fine job! Noxantes – Fingers-Crossed … Continue reading Taking it one track at a time

Crystalline – Repeat Repetition

Southend-On-Sea based Crystalline is the project of one Nicholas Cook and Repeat Repetition is his debut. The EP consists of four songs that crosses the divide between 1980’s indie, jangle pop and post punk. You only have to look at the stunning artwork to pick that vibe up! Cook’s vocals are reminiscent of the late Pete Shelly’s none more so than on opener Perfect Bronze as he scowls his way through the song. If guitar based post-punk is your thing than give this DIY EP a listen pronto. Facebook Continue reading Crystalline – Repeat Repetition

Mirror Decay – Mirror Decay EP

Barcelona’s Mirror Decay open this, their debut EP, with a pretty damn jaw dropping moment in the shape of Radio. It’s a beautiful track that reminds me of Talulah Gosh’s finest moments. The singers voice is just beautiful over the jangling guitars which at points sound like Blondie’s Dreaming. The backing vocals are pretty damn perfect too. I had better stop gushing now! The rest of the EP gives the band a chance to show that the opener was not a flash in the pan. It’s not. They even come close to matching it on Wrong and the slow and … Continue reading Mirror Decay – Mirror Decay EP
