Records I Like Mix February 2020

Well a bit later than usual but finally here is the mix for February 2020 featuring tracks released in the past month or so – some a bit longer. 60 minutes of listening pleasure! Details and full tracklisting: Golden Teardrops – I Won’t Be Fooled Again Is that a bit of floor stompin’ northern soul I can hear creeping into to their brand of baroque/sunshine pop? I think it is you know! The Lousy Pop Group – Days It’s a gentle, wistful track that harks back to 1980s indiepop/twee and which fades away far too soon. Wild Nothing – Blue … Continue reading Records I Like Mix February 2020

Midweek Catch Up #1 – Indiepop &c

A catch up of stuff caught on the Records I Like Radar. The Radio Dept. have released a new single. Titled The Absence of Birds it’s backed with a remix of the same song. The former is a wispy indiepop song with folk-ish overtones whilst the latter mixes ambient with drone. You can get it from here. Diet Cig released a new track at the end of last month. Titled Night Terrors it’s a fine example of alternative pop with scary lyrics to match – boo! You can get it from here. Medway Scene veterans The Claim have a new … Continue reading Midweek Catch Up #1 – Indiepop &c

Stoop Kid – Nothing At All

At the time of their last release, that being the excellent Uhm Yeah Sure EP, Stoop Kid was the project of one Jens Reubens. On this brand new EP it still is but now Reubens has formed a full band that will start to play gigs later this year. Anyway update over let’s return to the EP. The EP opens with the catchy Thought This Was The Uniform which gives way to the initially slower Done Deal. After opening with some chiming guitars with vocals to match the song picks up speed with jangling guitars kicking in for a minute … Continue reading Stoop Kid – Nothing At All

Mountain Moves – Ocean Bliss EP

The Deerhof referenced Mountain Moves hail from Bandung, Indonesia forming in 2017. The band consist of a core of Ferin and Lajiw and the line-up expands when the band play live. On this, their debut release, the band produce four slabs of strong indiepop tunes on which the band already provide a distinctive sound far removed from the C86/Sarah Record influences produced by their peers. Whilst the sound is predominately twee the instruments come to the fore pushing the vocals to the background which was something I found too much, being a bit too sugary sweet, on first listens but … Continue reading Mountain Moves – Ocean Bliss EP

Tampopo – Half A World Away

Tampopo’s last release Atompop was a pretty good EP so I was keen to hear how the follow up fared. Opener Down Under wrong footed me at first but the initial 1990s guitar sound soon gave way to more familiar indiepop sounds. OMG is one of those songs that remind me of so much but I just can’t put my finger on it! Suffice to say it’s a terrific jangling indiepop song with boy girl/vocals and erm, t-shirts. Despite coming from Denmark you would be forgiven thinking that the band come from, as the EP/first track titles and the artwork … Continue reading Tampopo – Half A World Away

Pop Crimes – Debuts

Originally released last October Debuts gets a re-release on cassette (and digital of course) on Howlin’ Banana Records. The band, who are a supergroup of sorts as they comprise members of En Attendant Ana, Blondi’s Salvation and Young Like Old Men take inspiration from the likes of The Pastels, Sarah Records and Pavement. Don’t let that guide you mind as this release mixes up 1960s garage, a bit of grunge and most certainly some noise. Musically each of these songs, which are sometimes harsh or raw, always veer on the side of melody and contain more than enough catchy guitar … Continue reading Pop Crimes – Debuts
