The Black Heart Death Cult – Sonic Dhoom

Sonic Dhoom is the first new material we have heard from Melbourne’s The Black Heart Death Cult since their debut album early last year. It’s fine piece of Asian inspired psychedelic done featuring some wonderful sitar work. I am pretty sure it’s a nod to Pete Kember. Flip side It’s Getting Heavy flirts with religion, just as Mr Kember’s band once did, as the Neo-psychedelia inspired guitars and vocals inspire visions of choirs and celestial bodies. Sonic Dhoom is available digitally from the band. There will be a 7″ single appearing on Salty Dog Records soon. Facebook Continue reading The Black Heart Death Cult – Sonic Dhoom

bdrmm – Happy

Hull’s bdrmm will be releasing their debut album via Sonic Cathedral later this year. It’s one of the first songs the band wrote and is about letting go when a relationship ends. The label describes Happy as “Just Like Heaven’ meets the first DIIV album” and whilst I am not sure about that it’s a great jangling alt-rock/dreampop track that bodes well for that debut. Happy is available digitally from all the usual places. Facebook Continue reading bdrmm – Happy

Tvärtom – Järkytys

Helsinki’s Tvärtom follow up last Septembers self titled EP with another fine slice of jangling and melodic indiepop. Despite the twee sounding guitars the song is about shock and rage but given they sing in their native language it’s hard to imagine that given the nature of the vocals. Järkytys, which was the first song written by the band back in 2018, is available from their bandcamp page on a pay what you want basis. Facebook Continue reading Tvärtom – Järkytys

The Yellow Melodies -C86 e indiepop

Spanish band The Yellow Melodies sing about their record collection, fanzines, record labels, music festivals and playlists on C86 e indiepop which is a new track taken from the forthcoming Sunshine Pop Ep1. They name check everyone from The Television Personalities to The Shop Assistants, Creation Records To Sarah and Indietracks to Wales Goes Pop on this fine burst of indiepop fuzziness. The Sunshine Pop EP1 features five tracks in total including their contribution to the recent F.A.R. Out compilation It’s A Good Day Today and their version of La chanson de Jacky originally by Jacques Brel but better known … Continue reading The Yellow Melodies -C86 e indiepop

Nectar – Fishy

The new single from Nectar, and the follow up to January’s Blister, is a re-recording of a track that was originally released in 2015. Whilst the original has it charms the new version wears it’s new coating well. It’s a blistering (no pun intended!) alt rock/noise pop track with guitars and vocals that echoes to the sounds of the 1990’s over the course of it’s 92 seconds. Pointers? The Amps, Breeders etc. Most good. Facebook Continue reading Nectar – Fishy

VIM – Waiting EP

I have been Waiting er looking forward to this EP since the title track dropped last December. The first four tracks here are excellent examples of shimmering and ethereal dream pop. The songs swirl like no tomorrow and closing ones eyes they present hazy, shady and mottled imagery. The female vocals are softened, calming and soothing the listener as waves of guitars and synths glisten. However I was not expecting the final track to divert from this path with the band showing a different side. The title may give some clues because Krautro is a droning Krautrock opus. Even at … Continue reading VIM – Waiting EP

Records I Like Mix March 2020

Another mix collating tracks released in the past month or so. Lots to listen too here (hear?). Full tracklisting: The Tubs – I Don’t Know How It Works The debut single from another offshoot from Joanna Gruesome. The Empty Shell – You Can’t Hide The same is true for You Can’t Hide which gives nods towards the likes of The Wake and The Sea Urchins both musically and lyrically. Pop at Summer – Sunny Day Parade With a band name like Pop At Summer and a song title of Sunny Day Parade I will guess most people will fathom how … Continue reading Records I Like Mix March 2020

Weekend Round Up #2

I am writing this one later than expected and as I listen, being a nice varied mix on this blustery Sunday Night. Australian indiepop legends Even As We Speak will be releasing a new album on Shelflife Records and Discos De Kirlian in June. Forgiving is the first single to be lifted from said album and it is, as you would expect from the band, to be a lovely twee/c86 inspired slab of pop music. The band play London’s Lexington on March 28th supported by Jetstream Pony and The Hannah Barberas. Guess who can’t make it – sigh. Talking of … Continue reading Weekend Round Up #2
