Red Sleeping Beauty and Cristina Quesada – Chicas De Madrid / Love At Third Sight

Chicas De Madrid sees Swedish indie/synth pop legends Red Sleeping Beauty join forces with Elefant’s Spanish Pineapple Princess Cristina Quesada. It’s written by Niklas Angergård of the former whilst the latter applies her voice. It’s a rework of New York City Girls from Red Sleeping Beauty’s recent Stockholm album. It’s a slow paced synth pop track that glides along nicely thanks to the vocals with pointers being the likes of Saint Etienne, Hop Chip and even The K.L.F. It’s backed with a rework (cover version?) of Quesada’s recent Love At Third Sight single with the male vocals giving the song … Continue reading Red Sleeping Beauty and Cristina Quesada – Chicas De Madrid / Love At Third Sight

Auto-Vélo – Copernica EP

Auto-Vélo is the new project from Graeme Elston who has previously been in bands such as Love Parade, Astronaut, Eva Luna as well recording under his own name and being a renowned sound engineer. The Copernica EP is the debut release under the new monikor and features four indie/synth pop songs which showcases Elston’s versatility. The title track opens proceedings and features jerky guitars with backing beats provided by the synth alongside side excellent main and backing vocals. It grabs the listener almost immediately and is a damn fine pop song! Auto-Vélo MTRK could easily be explained as a long … Continue reading Auto-Vélo – Copernica EP

The Records I Like Mix July 2019

A new mix compiling tracks from the past month or so. Plenty of C86 influenced music this time alongside the usual mix of shoegaze, janglepop and alt-rock. Full Tracklisting: Death Of Heather – Mind It’s a song that features slow simmering guitars that echo profoundly alongside hushed vocals which sing of someone who isn’t out of mind but yet isn’t here or there. The Proctors – Letters To The Girl And what a belter we have on our hands, well ears! Jangling guitars, catchy boy/girl vocals and a melody to die for. Holy Now – It Will All End In Tears … Continue reading The Records I Like Mix July 2019

Red Sleeping Beauty – Tonight EP

Red Sleeping Beauty lift Tonight as a single (are there any more tracks left on Stockholm?) and it’s another example of a pleasing pop track with joint vocals and synths that echo throughout. Mind you second track Someone Somewhere should have been the single. It’s melodies are as catchy as a dose of the catchiest flu and the vocals continue to delight as the song progresses. The band get back to their original indiepop roots with a cover of Emma’s House originally by the Field Mice. Starting of in a sedate manner it slowly morphs into a piece of eletronica. … Continue reading Red Sleeping Beauty – Tonight EP

The Dreams Never End – Cor da Alma

Portuguese synth pop band The Dreams Never End (great name!) have been going for donkeys but this track, taken from the recent Orphans compilation via French label North Shadows Records, is the first I have heard from them. Translated as Soul Color (you can see where this is going based on this weekends posts!) the song is about if hurt and sorrow was a colour, the eyes of the songs subject would be it. A bit harsh on the artworks vintage beauty methinks but the driving synths beats of the track well and truly hit the aural spot. I suspect … Continue reading The Dreams Never End – Cor da Alma

Red Sleeping Beauty – California

California is the latest single to be lifted from the current Stockholm long player and appears in three forms. The single itself starts in a sedate, folkish mood before synth pop beats kick in drawing comparisons to The Pet Shop Boys.  Norwegian singer/songwriter Dylan Mondegreen then supplies this take on the longing and yearning Ikkje Gråt for Me, California. The final version is a demo recording which is less polished and, with the synths being toned down, gives the track a different feel. Three solid versions of one fine track! California is available digitally from the band or in lossy … Continue reading Red Sleeping Beauty – California
