Fresh – Cinema Woes

Cinema Woes was recorded at the same time as Fresh were recording their debut album Withdraw which was released back in June. It’s short, sharp pop-punk tune with an energetic burst despite the anxiety behind the words. All proceeds from sales of the song goes to Beat, which is an eating disorders charity. Go and part with some pennies for a worthy cause as well as a cracking tune. Facebook Continue reading Fresh – Cinema Woes

Blussh – Shut Up Becky!

The debut EP from Brisbane’s Blussh is a fast-paced, grunge and riot grrrl influenced EP. It’s not for the faint of heart as they come at you in droves with noisy and shouty tunes about sad girls, mental health and erm, a big dong – they are not short on humor and put-downs either. Not sure who Becky is but she had better shut up whilst I give this punk-pop frenzy another spin. That said it’s so loud I doubt I could hear her! Homepage Continue reading Blussh – Shut Up Becky!

Audiobaton – Where You Are

Where You Are by Dallas based Audiobaton is a fuzzy, distorted and noisy shoegaze EP. Alongside the obvious strengths that lie within the songs there are plenty of reference points such as Loop, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Darkside and My Bloody Valentine to name but a few. There are also more than a few nods in the direction of drone and to a lesser extent psychedelia. Songs such as Here and I’ll Run are excellent and should be on any discerning listeners shoegazing playlist but everything on this EP is worth a listen or five. Where You Are is … Continue reading Audiobaton – Where You Are

Fuzzy Monday

Overdriver – Slow in Winter Australian shoegaze act Overdriver’s latest single features two tracks. Stuck In A Dream is a song that works it way from the ground up being a slow building and burning track complete with haunting vocals courtesy of Daniela Angione Farren from the band Submotile. The title track and flip side is more traditional shoegazing fare, resplendent with some fuzzy guitar. Twitter Lacing – Swirl Swirl is the second single to be taken from Lacing’s forthcoming album Without. It’s a grunge influenced, guitar laden track that errs on the heavier side of alt-rock thanks to the … Continue reading Fuzzy Monday

Spunsugar – Mouth Full of You

Following on from two taster releases I Shouldn’t Care and the excellent Native Tongue Swedish alt-rockers Spunsugar have released their debut EP in the shape of Mouth Full Of You. It features four tracks including the two aforementioned ones and is packed full of fuzzy guitars, drum machines and 90s influences. Of the two previously unheard tracks it’s Crumble that I lean to most as it flits from grunge and shoegaze being filled with some fine hooks and sampled drum beats. It’s driving stuff! Mouth Full of You is out now and you can get it digitally from here. Facebook Continue reading Spunsugar – Mouth Full of You

Various Artists – YLLWSPCL: Bandung Pop Darlings The Mixtapes

A solid compilation featuring and reflecting on bands over the years (1995-2015) from Bandung, Indonesia. It’s amazing how many of these bands look towards to the UK for inspiration and some of these tracks cover Britpop, C86 and Madchester. The compilers apologise for the lack of “high fidelity” in some of these recordings but that’s not a negative for me as these contributions are a snapshot in time as demonstrated on the likes of Old and Grey by Peewee and Sadford Lads Club crossing JAMC and the Wall Of Sound on Dan (Sheila on 7). It’s not all guitar based … Continue reading Various Artists – YLLWSPCL: Bandung Pop Darlings The Mixtapes
