Swim Team – Everyday Things

Earlier this year former Stone Rose frontman Ian Brown morphed into Primal Scream on his comeback single First World Problems. On their new song Melbourne’s Swim Team sing about the same subject but deliver it in a slyly humorous way. They don’t morph into anyone other than themselves on this garage inspired jangle pop tune that will bring a wry smile to the listeners face. Get un-Loaded with this fun, none too serious, pop tune! The Hannah Barberas – The Hannah Barberas Get Physical

The Hannah Barberas have compiled tracks from their first three EPs and have included three new ones for their first ever physical release. Hence, the title of course. I covered some previous EP’s before but will still give a heads up to the indie pop brilliance of Slow Cooked and the excellent Throwing Muses-ish Spellbound in case you have not heard these wonderful songs before. Of the three new tracks it’s the lovely I Like You In Blue that harks to bygone eras that tickles my fancy and the voice of Lucy is a delight. Very Amelia Fletcher like. The … Continue reading The Hannah Barberas – The Hannah Barberas Get Physical

Nah… – Apple Blossoms

Nah… state this is Spring single is their best song yet and who am I to argue? It certainly has a feel good factor about it and you can imagine the wind blowing through your hair whilst admiring the trees on the cover. Joint vocals join jangling guitars and as the song reaches its climax it feels like it’s the ending to a film as our heroes ride off into the sunset. Flip side Primavera, which translates as Spring, has a Latin American feel. It’s a slow, romantic affair especially the bossa nova beats of the drums. It’s music (Latin … Continue reading Nah… – Apple Blossoms

The Claim – Journey

Fresh on the back of the re-release of their classic Boomy Tella album Medway Scene legends/veterans have announced a brand-new long player. Titled The New Industrial Ballads it’s preceded by the single Journey and to be honest it’s like they have never been away as it contains more jangles and hooks than you can shake a stick at. Upbeat central! You can pre-order The New Industrial Ballads from here. Facebook Continue reading The Claim – Journey

Stoop Kid – Uhm Yeah Sure

Stoop Kid, who is one Jens Rubens, have released an EP consisting of four bedroom pop songs that jangle in and out of your consciousness like no tomorrow thanks to the guitar and vocal style. The retro sounding Nothing From Under The Sink is my pick of the bunch but there isn’t a duff moment here. The label think this would be a good listen for fans of DIIV and Beach Fossils. Personally I think it’s for anyone who likes an old-fashioned earworm! I have no idea if this is the first release as Stoop Kid isn’t the most original … Continue reading Stoop Kid – Uhm Yeah Sure

Perfect Strangers – Unlikely Partners

Unlikely Partners is a collection of songs that flirt with the sounds of C86 and the jangle pop of the Paisley Underground. The band, who feature members of The Drums and Violens, deliver an album which doesn’t give us one standout track or wasted fillers but instead treats the listener to eight consistently strong songs. These include the short and poppy Deborah, the psychedelic-tinged Suds and the jangling Psychic Self-Defense. Entertaining stuff. Continue reading Perfect Strangers – Unlikely Partners

February Round Up #2

And the round up is on day two…. Patrick Farrugia – Too Late Patrick Farrugia has been releasing music for a few years now and the two tracks on Too Late is the first I have heard from him. Both tracks are 1980s-inspired or in the case of Oblivion 100% inspired by New Order’s Age of Consent such are the similarities between the two. Not bad then! Sadly less said about Olympiad the better. I am left wondering if it’s actually by the same person. Very MOR. Just grab the first track.
