Another collection of tracks released in the past month or so featuring the usual mix of indiepop, janglepop, shoegaze and with some power pop, noisepop and just some noise thrown in. Enjoy! Alternative stream at Hearthis.at Full Tracklisting: Atta Girl – September It’s September that grabs my attention with it’s mix of indiepop and shoegaze as it jangles it’s way through the maze of melodic guitars heading for it’s soulful conclusion. Spunsugar – Mouth Full of You

Following on from two taster releases I Shouldn’t Care and the excellent Native Tongue Swedish alt-rockers Spunsugar have released their debut EP in the shape of Mouth Full Of You. It features four tracks including the two aforementioned ones and is packed full of fuzzy guitars, drum machines and 90s influences. Of the two previously unheard tracks it’s Crumble that I lean to most as it flits from grunge and shoegaze being filled with some fine hooks and sampled drum beats. It’s driving stuff! Mouth Full of You is out now and you can get it digitally from here. Facebook Continue reading Spunsugar – Mouth Full of You

Various Artists – Alternative Melodies 8

This may be the eighth volume in the alternative melodies series collated by A Lonely Ghost Burning but it’s the first one I have stumbled upon. With the aim of “introducing new listeners to the underexposed and immensely talented artists” it features the likes of Fanclub and Soumbalgwang both of which have been featured on these pages before. But what about the rest? The trouble with compilations there are always going to be tracks which don’t agree with you. There are others such as Sua’s Love, which is a pleasant enough listen here, but isn’t ever going to find a … Continue reading Various Artists – Alternative Melodies 8

Guitar Days – An Unlikely Story of Brazilian Music

There are some interesting compilations turning up on Bandcamp of late. Guitar Days – An Unlikely Story of Brazilian Music is the soundtrack to the documentary of the same name which tells the story, coinciding with Brazil’s transition to democracy, that a new wave of bands emerged who looked to the US, UK and Australia for inspiration and who chose to sing in English rather than Portuguese. Aside from The Pin Ups and The Cigarettes these bands are new to me. I enjoyed the racket made by Garage Fuzz and New Ground by Valv. Musically most of it’s not my … Continue reading Guitar Days – An Unlikely Story of Brazilian Music

Say Sue Me – Your Book

Say Sue Me release their new single Your Book on October 4th 2019. It’s backed with Good People. On Your Book the band refrain from the surf rock/rock ‘n roll that has infused their recent releases and return to their alternative rock and shoegazing roots. It’s a melodic track that is slow burning only being interrupted by a frantic burst of guitars before pausing and returning on it’s path. The calm, assured vocals suit the desolate words. Your Book is available to pre-order from Damnably in 7″ yellow vinyl and digital formats. Facebook Continue reading Say Sue Me – Your Book

Univers – Matèria Corrupta

The new single from the Catalan Wedding Present (my words, not theirs!) features two tracks that were part of the sessions for 2016s Limit Constant album which were, until now, unreleased. They are backed with remixes of both tracks. Joventuts Unides is a full frontal assault consisting of noisy, jangling guitars and deadpan vocals. L’Home i L’espasa is is a melodic indiepop song which ends with a fine jangling burst with the words reaching anthem like proportions. All of which makes me wonder why neither song made the album cut given they are as good or even better as some … Continue reading Univers – Matèria Corrupta

Various Artists – YLLWSPCL: Bandung Pop Darlings The Mixtapes

A solid compilation featuring and reflecting on bands over the years (1995-2015) from Bandung, Indonesia. It’s amazing how many of these bands look towards to the UK for inspiration and some of these tracks cover Britpop, C86 and Madchester. The compilers apologise for the lack of “high fidelity” in some of these recordings but that’s not a negative for me as these contributions are a snapshot in time as demonstrated on the likes of Old and Grey by Peewee and Sadford Lads Club crossing JAMC and the Wall Of Sound on Dan (Sheila on 7). It’s not all guitar based … Continue reading Various Artists – YLLWSPCL: Bandung Pop Darlings The Mixtapes

Special Friend – Low Tide

Low Tide is taken from the forthcoming self titled EP from Special Friend. It’s a mix of garage and indie rock which already makes it mark just as the psych influenced guitars start to make some noise. There is another track, Before, also available for streaming which merges garage and 1960’s influenced indiepop together for maximum effect. I cannot wait to give the whole EP a listen when it is released but for now these two tracks will do quite nicely for now. Special Friend will be released on Howlin’ Banana records on 10″ vinyl and digital formats at the … Continue reading Special Friend – Low Tide
