Going To Brighton is the second single to be lifted from the forthcoming album Withdraw by London’s Fresh. It’s a pleasing track and easily remembered because of the earworms it contains. Singer Kathryn’s voice is sharp and strong which suitably matches the band’s pop-punk sound. Fresh? Pretty confident more like. The Room Upstairs are an English band influenced by the likes of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Simon and Garfunkel amongst others and that can be clearly heard on this single. They have been around for a few years now with an album, a couple of EP’s and singles under their belts but this is the first release of theirs that I have heard. And it’s not bad. It’s a mixture of punk, pop and riot grrrl resulting in a raw sounding but powerful song. Excellent drums and shouty vocals too. On this release Na Grebne Volny turn into a full-on surf pop band with two instrumental tracks that make the listener think of the beaches of Southern California rather than the colder climate of Pereslavl-Zalessky which is where the band are from. You could also imagine that Dick Dale is on guitar. That said I hope the band revert to their previous sound at some point because I miss the lovely voice of their singer!
