The Proctors – Letters To The Girl

Letters to The Girl is the Proctors first single since 2016’s Cellophane – if you discount January’s digital offering Icelandic that is. And what a belter we have on our hands, well ears! Jangling guitars, catchy boy/girl vocals and a melody to die for. No wonder their label thinks it will become a “future guitar pop classic”. It’s hard to disagree with that sentiment. Flipside Footsteps has a lot to do in order to follow the “A” side up and you know, it nearly pulls it off. Layers of guitars and synths combine with Gavin Priest’s words and voice producing … Continue reading The Proctors – Letters To The Girl

Jeanines – Jeanines

The self titled debut album by Jeanines takes me back to the years of my youth circa early/mid 1980s. It takes me back to the times I eagerly waited for fanzines, flexi-discs and records to drop through my door or the weekly trip to pick up the music press to excitably scour for even more things to spend my hard-earned pennies on. Not to mention the countless trips to the record shop! So much on this fantastic record reminds me of those days. The DIY ethos, the very short songs, the artwork with a distant church, the 1960s influenced tunes … Continue reading Jeanines – Jeanines

Alpine Subs – Alpine Subs

South African based label Subjangle provide us with another dose of 1960s inspired janglepop this time courtesy of Chicago’s Alpine Subs. On their debut release the band open with a slice of Californian surf pop in the form of Gutted. To be fair you will be feeling far from it as they deliver songs of a sunny sounding disposition again and again despite sometimes forlorn lyrics. There are songs that echo to The Beatles during their psychedelic period (Menomonee) and songs that echo to The Beatles during their pop period (More Than Love). Across the album it’s hard to pick … Continue reading Alpine Subs – Alpine Subs

Terry vs. Tori – Cascais

Cascais is the latest single to be taken from the forthcoming debut album by Terry vs. Tori. It’s a lovely, sometimes whimsical song, that eases itself in to the listener’s consciousness. The song also features contributions from Foliage which makes it an indiepop dream line up if there ever was one! It’s backed with the fourth single to be lifted from the aforementioned album. On Chambré Terry vs. Tori once again demonstrate that they are the leading light for indiepop in 2019. Drawing on inspiration from c86 alongside the reignition of the sound of Labrador records from 10-12 years ago … Continue reading Terry vs. Tori – Cascais

Ogikubo Station – Okinawan Love Songs

The opener on this EP Would I Break My Heart Enough For You is not far from being the perfect jangling indiepop song. The way the guitars skirt along the punk-pop borders with the female vocals joining in puts it right straight into C86 territory. Spend Some Time With Me is a mix of punk vibes mixed with power pop and is both short and sweet. However, I am not sure about the last track Dr Worm which is a bit too “arty-farty” for me, but I am sure many will appreciate the Talking Heads/Tina Weymouth post-punk vibe. That said … Continue reading Ogikubo Station – Okinawan Love Songs

The Blue Herons – The Way You Look at Me (Feat. Krissy Vanderwoude)

The Blue Herons is a project of Andy Jossi of The Churchhill Garden which errs on the side of indie/janglepop unlike the former which leans towards dreampop/shoegaze. The Way You Look at Me features longtme collaborator Krissy Vanderwoude who writes and sings the words with Jossi arranging the music. This time they are joined by Marty Willson-Piper of The Church who provides some additional guitars. So with such a build up surely the song is gonna fall flat. Nah! Not a bit of it! Opening like Goodbye from The Sundays it’s a joyous song about falling in love for the … Continue reading The Blue Herons – The Way You Look at Me (Feat. Krissy Vanderwoude)

Happypills – Summer Song

Hot on the heels of his debut album Milk Floes, which I failed to mention so let me rectify that by pointing you over here, Japan’s one man bedroom indiepop band Happypills has released a new single. I am not quite sure why Summer Song did not make the aforementioned album (maybe it’s because it’s so short) but it would have been a worthy inclusion thanks to the now trademark jangling guitars with a vocal style that wavers between deadpan and emotional ridden. The song itself may be over a tad sharpish (1m44s fact fans) but it will linger on … Continue reading Happypills – Summer Song
