Witterings from an old indie kid
South African based label Subjangle provide us with another dose of 1960s inspired janglepop this time courtesy of Chicago’s Alpine Subs. On their debut release the band open with a slice of Californian surf pop in the form of Gutted. To be fair you will be feeling far from it as they deliver songs of a sunny sounding disposition again and again despite sometimes forlorn lyrics. There are songs that echo to The Beatles during their psychedelic period (Menomonee) and songs that echo to The Beatles during their pop period (More Than Love).
Across the album it’s hard to pick that one tune that would be on your summer soundtrack. There are plenty to choose from such as What Else, Maybe Tonight and The Doctor. Whether you are partial to retro sounds or jangle pop, maybe both, then there is plenty here (hear?) to keep you entertained. Lary shirts optional.
It’s out now on Subjangle on CD and digital formats.
