Records I Like Mix March 2020

Another mix collating tracks released in the past month or so. Lots to listen too here (hear?). Full tracklisting: The Tubs – I Don’t Know How It Works The debut single from another offshoot from Joanna Gruesome. The Empty Shell – You Can’t Hide The same is true for You Can’t Hide which gives nods towards the likes of The Wake and The Sea Urchins both musically and lyrically. Pop at Summer – Sunny Day Parade With a band name like Pop At Summer and a song title of Sunny Day Parade I will guess most people will fathom how … Continue reading Records I Like Mix March 2020

Weekend Round Up #2

I am writing this one later than expected and as I listen, being a nice varied mix on this blustery Sunday Night. Australian indiepop legends Even As We Speak will be releasing a new album on Shelflife Records and Discos De Kirlian in June. Forgiving is the first single to be lifted from said album and it is, as you would expect from the band, to be a lovely twee/c86 inspired slab of pop music. The band play London’s Lexington on March 28th supported by Jetstream Pony and The Hannah Barberas. Guess who can’t make it – sigh. Talking of … Continue reading Weekend Round Up #2

The Empty Shell – Faint Light EP

Naufal Azhari is the person behind Bandung based The Empty Shell who have just released their debut release in the form of three track The Faint Light EP. Opener Put It Behind You is a a slow paced dreamy indiepop track with shoegaze influences that echoes to the sound of days long past. The same is true for You Can’t Hide which gives nods towards the likes of The Wake and The Sea Urchins both musically and lyrically. Disappear brings proceedings to a close, dwelling in a pool of despair. An impressive EP and another fine addition to the list … Continue reading The Empty Shell – Faint Light EP

The Churchhill Garden – In Light

You know you are in for a treat when Andy Jossi’s The Churchhill Garden team up with Krissy Vanderwoude who once again supplies the lyrics and voice. The combination of that voice and Jossi’s guitars is always one to look forward to as together they produce a fantastic array of sounds. Vanderwoude’s voice is dominant, giving her own words justice. They are never undermined by the fuzzy guitars which are left to produce their own wall of sound as they play out whilst the vocals fade away. If you are looking for a one word description it’s gorgeous. Amazingly available … Continue reading The Churchhill Garden – In Light

Neyemia Grue – Blue-Hearted

Neyemia Grue are a dream-pop band who hail from Sumy in the Ukraine. The Blue-Hearted EP is the follow up to 2017s Revelations single and features five tracks. The songs veer between the lively and the dreamy, sometimes both, but regardless of the speed of the songs it’s the female vocals stand out. As the vocalist sings in her native tongue I have no idea what is being sung but I get the impression from the song titles that the words err on the side of melancholy. I find that her voice reminds me of Alison Shaw from The Cranes … Continue reading Neyemia Grue – Blue-Hearted

акульи слёзы – малостьby

The new single from Ufa’s акульи слёзы (Google translates their name as Shark Tears) is, as the band write, about “difficulties, experiences and feelings that disappear”. It’s certainly a sorrowful affair as mournful trumpet sound add to the atmospheric feel of the song. Whilst it is somewhat far removed from the bands output I have previously heard (4AD influenced shoegaze/dreampop) it’s beautiful stuff indeed. Gloom rather than Dream pop. Records I Like Mix February 2020

Well a bit later than usual but finally here is the mix for February 2020 featuring tracks released in the past month or so – some a bit longer. 60 minutes of listening pleasure! Details and full tracklisting: Golden Teardrops – I Won’t Be Fooled Again Is that a bit of floor stompin’ northern soul I can hear creeping into to their brand of baroque/sunshine pop? I think it is you know! The Lousy Pop Group – Days It’s a gentle, wistful track that harks back to 1980s indiepop/twee and which fades away far too soon. Wild Nothing – Blue … Continue reading Records I Like Mix February 2020
