Three From Down Under
Meltway are a new Danish/Norwegian band who write that they are a “dreamy and noisy indie-rock heavily inspired by the 90’s shoegaze-scene”. They release their debut EP titled Everytime next week and have previewed the track From Blue as a taster. It’s a longish track which takes those influences into account and I like the way the guitars merge with the breezy vocals giving a spacious aura to the track. I have not heard of Dutch band Meadowlake previously but have recently stumbled across Blood Crawls which I believe is the second single to be taken from their forthcoming second album. Musically and vocally you get the impression that the song is calm and unagitated. However the words suggest otherwise, with the songs protagonist being both angry and upset. I am not sure if this type of song is generally the norm when it comes to Meadowlake’s output and I guess there is only one way to find out. Canadians Telecom Falls describe themselves as a “post-goth/shoegaze”band and the fusion of dream-pop with hints of 1980s 4AD on Apart is not far off the mark meeting that description either. I like the Asian influences on the sampling which works well with the ethereal and Gothic voice of lyricist and vocalist Lydia Low. Apart is the second single to be taken from the forthcoming album Desire and aside from Fawns Of Love I cannot think (or have heard) of any other band who mixes dream-pop and post-punk so well. I missed the latest EP from Reynosa’s Soma Cake when it came out last month but now it’s got a release on Stupid Decisions, that excellent label which promotes music from the band’s home country Mexico as well as Central and South America. It’s the follow up to 2018’s Girls Bite Harder album and the band continue down the road to melancholy. Fusing dreampop, post-punk and shoegaze the guitars are ably supported by the drum machine/sequencer whilst the songs tell stories full of gloom and woe. The Betrayed EP is the debut release from 19 year old Seoul based (and self confessed music nerd) Minjun Kang aka Closer Preys. Musically this DIY bedroom project moves between dream, indie and twee pop. There are some interesting ideas and noises here none more so on Distant Friends with it’s hushed vocals and chiming guitar sound. The wonderfully named I Tried To Swim Across The Ocean picks up the pace adding some noise and layers to the aforementioned guitars whilst Dark Room has that echoing, DIY bedroom pop sound. Bangkok based Death Of Heather are releasing their debut album later this year and have just released the third single to be lifted from it. In Me is, like their previous efforts, full of shimmering guitars and hushed vocals. That doesn’t suggest a band with a lack of ideas but instead one who are honing their craft especially when it comes to the lengthy but dreamy guitar outro that I could listen too on a continuous loop. Like A Rainbow Glitch is an shimmering, ethereal track that makes me imagine I am drifting on clouds and at risk of falling asleep to Alexandra Zagainova’s lovely voice.
