Star Tropics – The Other Side of Midnight

The Other Side of Midnight is the first we have heard from Star Tropics since their 2017 album Lost Worlds. And it’s well worth the wait as they return with a charming indiepop song despite the maudlin lyrics. The band take their cues from the jangling (shambling?) C86 bands and the subsequent Sarah Records roster before applying their own delicious take across the indiepop board. Most marvellous! Perfect Strangers – Unlikely Partners

Unlikely Partners is a collection of songs that flirt with the sounds of C86 and the jangle pop of the Paisley Underground. The band, who feature members of The Drums and Violens, deliver an album which doesn’t give us one standout track or wasted fillers but instead treats the listener to eight consistently strong songs. These include the short and poppy Deborah, the psychedelic-tinged Suds and the jangling Psychic Self-Defense. Entertaining stuff. Continue reading Perfect Strangers – Unlikely Partners

Enids – Worriers

Enids hail from København and make punk inspired diy tweepop. There are four songs on this EP and none make the 2 minute mark being brash, fuzzy and noisy. Now that’s the type of music I love! Imagine The Ramones being on the C86 tape being fronted by The Flatmates Debbie Haynes. Play loud! It’s out digitally here whilst cassette formats will follow on Funeral Tapes and Rusted Teeth. Mirror Decay – Mirror Decay EP

Barcelona’s Mirror Decay open this, their debut EP, with a pretty damn jaw dropping moment in the shape of Radio. It’s a beautiful track that reminds me of Talulah Gosh’s finest moments. The singers voice is just beautiful over the jangling guitars which at points sound like Blondie’s Dreaming. The backing vocals are pretty damn perfect too. I had better stop gushing now! The rest of the EP gives the band a chance to show that the opener was not a flash in the pan. It’s not. They even come close to matching it on Wrong and the slow and … Continue reading Mirror Decay – Mirror Decay EP

Beauty Parlour – Fall In Love

Fall In Love is the debut EP from the band that features ex members of the Fungi Girls and Vacations. The EP contains four slices of dreamy indiepop that will warm the cockles of any indiepop and C86 fan’s heart. Jangling guitars and boy/girl vocals rule the roost here and both Chance On You and Jamais Vu would have made my end of 2018 lists if I had heard it the EP in time. Exceptional. Records I Like 2018 – The Capsule!

If the 55 tracks in the Best of 2018 mixes/playlists were not enough I have compiled a track each from most of the releases featured on Records I Like in 2018 in a handy Spotify playlist. If you use Deezer don’t worry as here is a link to an almost identical playlist on that service. Have a great new year and I will “see” you all in 2019! Records I Like Podcast December – Best of 2018

55 tracks in my best of this year. Were they the best tracks in 2018? For me yes as they gave me plenty of plays, thoughts, meaning and enjoyment. Looking at the 55 choices my tastes have certainly changed this year. I have listened to Techno a lot more this year. Almost as much since I started listening to it 25 years plus ago and I was amazed that artists from then are still making some amazing tunes. Coldwave influenced post-punk gets stronger or maybe it’s because I am listening to and discovering more. Epic Shoegaze has also featured highly … Continue reading Records I Like Podcast December – Best of 2018
