July Round Up #1

As I mentioned the other day it’s been a bit quiet around here due to a job change so this weekend will be two posts dedicated to catching up on what I have been listening too over the past couple of weeks. Hyperdream – Selfish Dream Excellent shoegaze from Mexico. More than a few nods towards MBV (a speeded up version of Swallow?) both soundwise and cover art. Really liking this one. Facebook Flowerbox – Flowerbox An interesting and strong debut EP covering both indiepop and shoegaze. Most of the songs are slow paced which gives you time to appreciate … Continue reading July Round Up #1

Iris – Away

Some shoegaze from Toronto today. Iris follow up last years excellent self titled EP with new track Away. It starts off in a dream pop vein before escaping the shackles and soars amongst shimmering guitars and drums that penetrate through the song’s intense sound. The best bit comes towards the end as the ethereal female vocals join in urging the song towards it’s climax. A keeper for sure. Facebook Continue reading Iris – Away

Glaze – Daisy

I thought I was tuning into the indie section of the chart show when watching this video given it’s vintage look and sound. Fusing shoegaze and indie dance Daisy sounds like Chapterhouse going up against some baggy chancers. It’s a pretty effective tune and one for any indie dj’s playlist. Available digitally from here. Compilation Week – TBTCI Dives Into Asian Sounds

The Blog That Celebrates Itself Records (TBTCI) specialises in producing compilation tribute album whether to an artist, label or even part of the world. This latest compilation is a roundup of the Asian Scene and includes both covers as well as new or recent original recordings. Musically the album contains indiepop, shoegaze and dreampop. Standout tracks come from Indonesian noise pop outfit See The Eye, Chinese Shoegazers Dear Eloise and Jaapn’s Fluffytails with a gorgeous cover of Lemon’s Chair’s SWallowtail. However Indonesian post-punk outfit Pullo win it for me Round The Bed complete with Ian Curtis style vocals. It’s a … Continue reading Compilation Week – TBTCI Dives Into Asian Sounds

Compilation Week – Chiaroscuro. Italogaze 2018

Italian labels Seashell Records and Vipchoyo Sound Factory have come together to produce this compilation which gathers 13 new tracks from the Italian underground shoegazing scene. Whilst bands such as Stella Diana, Mary’s Restless Dream and RevRevRev were previously known to me the majority aren’t and this is a good starting point for the scene which has been affectionately labelled as Italogaze. And of the bands who I haven’t heard previously? I really enjoyed the post-punk meets shoegaze vibes of Electric Floor with I Made It Up whilst Klam, who have been around since 2012, delight with the quirky Begging … Continue reading Compilation Week – Chiaroscuro. Sound And Fury – Coming Down/Heaven Song

Shoegaze is the one genre on Bandcamp that regularly disappoints but now and again something brilliant happens as in the case of Chinese band Sound and Fury. Their new 7″ shines like a beacon none more so on Coming Down which is likely to be one of the best, if not the best, shoegazing songs you will hear this year. Guitars that crash down like waves battle with the ethereal female vocals resulting in a glorious sound. Heaven Song isn’t bad and a number of bands in the aforementioned genre would kill for a track like that but when compared … Continue reading Sound And Fury – Coming Down/Heaven Song

Neonic Sundrive – I Can’t See Your Eyes

I Can’t See Your Eyes by Moscow’s Neonic Sundrive is an enjoyable romp across both indiepop and shoegaze territories. Taken from the forthcoming debut album Lie Paradise it features noisy guitars and boy/girl vocals sounding like a cross between Tyrannosaurus Dead and a Strawberry Wine era My Bloody Valentine. Intriguing stuff. Instagram Continue reading Neonic Sundrive – I Can’t See Your Eyes
