Something For The Weekend? Three Compilations.

This week’s pack of three features three compilations that should keep you busy for this weekend and the next few come to think of it! Ghost Babes Compilation Vol.3 London based cassette label Ghost Babe Records are now onto their third compilation featuring just American bands whether they play garage, slacker rock or punk. Not heard of most of these except for the excellent Wedding Camp but already I am going to dig into the back catalogues of Lost Boy? (try searching that name on Bandcamp!) and Thick. It seems that when the cassettes are sold out the digital version … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three Compilations.

Closure – Journey EP

This EP has been one of my most loved discoveries of the past couple of months. It’s certainly one of the best debut releases I have heard for a while – well since Strange Passage last year.  Indie pop with a heavy post punk influence and some fantastic vocals to boot combine to make this a fantastic EP. Check out the jangletastic Would She Love Me and Slow Drive and try to deny you have heard better this year (and if you have tell me!). Essential listening……. Available on CDR from O Pamela or digitally from Let’s Kiss A Secret … Continue reading Closure – Journey EP

Records I Like Top 10 2016

Blimey. This year’s list was hard to compile given that I restrict myself to just 10 choices (self-inflicted stupidity!). I have been listening to plenty of punk, coldwave, indie-pop, riot grrrl, queercore, garage and post-punk but I think this selection is a fair reflection of my listening habits these past 12 months. Tracks missing the cut include the likes of Underworld, Joanna Gruesome, The Radio Dept., The Legends, Earth Girls,The Liminanas, Red Sleeping Beauty, Massive Attack, Jessica & The Fletchers, Vital Idles, Useless Youth, E’spaniel, Nice Try, Hate Week, Primetime, Tape Waves, The Wolfhounds, Merchandise, Slam, Blind Delon, Lad’s Mags, … Continue reading Records I Like Top 10 2016

Something For The Weekend – Three (Free?) Sampler Pack

Three label samplers for you today all of which are available for free – well on a pay what you want basis. That should keep you busy over the weekend. Oddbox Records feature a lot on this site simply because they consistently put out quality releases on a regular basis. The originally named 2016 rounds up their output this year and there are choice cuts here from The Wolfhounds, The Manhattan Love Suicides, The Bellamys, City Yelps and plenty more. Facebook I also like a lot of the music that Emotional Response releases but for some reason, I have not … Continue reading Something For The Weekend – Three (Free?) Sampler Pack

Bruising – I Don’t Mind

There have been a couple of great singles on the Beech Coma label already this year (Holy Now & Posture) and as 2016 enters its last month and a half here is another in the shape of I Don’t Mind by Leeds band Bruising. Their form of indie rock reminds me of the Elephant Six bands and in particular Dressy Bessy in their rockier moments. The combination of slacker guitars and singer Naomi Baguley’s unhurried vocal style could make this the last great single of 2016. It’s released on 7″ vinyl (250 copies) early next year or digitally on the … Continue reading Bruising – I Don’t Mind

TV Crime – Hooligans

This one from Nottingham’s TV Crime has been on repeat for a couple of weeks now. Hooligans is one hell a stomper of a tune that has it’s roots deep down in punk, pub rock and power pop alongside it’s terrace chants. If it doesn’t make you pogo, mosh or whatever else you do then there really is no hope. Most excellent. Hooligans is out now on 7″ vinyl or digitally via Static Shock Records. Facebook Continue reading TV Crime – Hooligans

Clearing The Decks

I have bookmarked a lot of music to mention but time prevents me from writing about them all individually so this post is a round up of them all serving as my must buy list too! Note: if you want to listen to a companion playlist to this post head over here. The Hundredth Anniversary released their Wreckers EP back in March. Not sure why I didn’t mention it then as it’s great. Another great release on Oddbox Records. Spanish indie poppers Band A Part have a compilation of their early material and demos out on Elefant Records. It’s a … Continue reading Clearing The Decks
