Moscow’s Apple Tree have just released their first new track in just over year. Titled еврокафе (eurocafeby if google translate has got it right) it’s a coldwave inspired post punk track with a slow burning sound. The female vocals sound downcast and gloomy whilst the lyrics forlornly hope for better things. As it continues to sheet it down in London town еврокафе seems to be an appropriate soundtrack as any. Quite a lot of post-punk has been bookmarked this year without too much of a mention on these pages. Time to rectify that. Das Funus come from one of my favourite cities (Prague) and they released two tracks in February. These are their first recordings for a few years. The band’s sound is darkwave with an epic Gothic tinge. Bože Odpověz errs on the edge of midnight whilst the slower paced Staré Domy highlights the female vocals which I am always a sucker for. Canadians Telecom Falls describe themselves as a “post-goth/shoegaze”band and the fusion of dream-pop with hints of 1980s 4AD on Apart is not far off the mark meeting that description either. I like the Asian influences on the sampling which works well with the ethereal and Gothic voice of lyricist and vocalist Lydia Low. Apart is the second single to be taken from the forthcoming album Desire and aside from Fawns Of Love I cannot think (or have heard) of any other band who mixes dream-pop and post-punk so well. I missed the latest EP from Reynosa’s Soma Cake when it came out last month but now it’s got a release on Stupid Decisions, that excellent label which promotes music from the band’s home country Mexico as well as Central and South America. It’s the follow up to 2018’s Girls Bite Harder album and the band continue down the road to melancholy. Fusing dreampop, post-punk and shoegaze the guitars are ably supported by the drum machine/sequencer whilst the songs tell stories full of gloom and woe. Handful of Snowdrops – The Four Winds Canadian post-punk veterans Handful of Snowdrops return with their first new material since 2018’s excellent Noir album. The Four Winds errs on the side of poppier side of synth-pop whilst Tail Sails is a moody, atmospheric instrumental track.
