Jan 1 is a sparkling gem from down under! It’s catchy, poppy and a bit noisy, being the sort of tune that should have you bopping around like no one’s business. The female vocals work well against the sometimes frantic fuzzy guitars and whilst Jan 1 is the first track I have heard from Fritz, it certainly will not be the last. Pop music as it should be. N ♡ T is the result of a self-imposed challenge to see if an album could be recorded in seven days by Argentinian act Las Densas. Given the quality of the seven indiepop songs contained within I would say the challenge was well and truly smashed. For me, Las Densas are at their most effective on the short punk inspired bursts such as Untitled or Vos as I like the intensity. Opening with some ethereal, almost lost, vocals complete with pounding percussion and swirling guitars there is only going to be one winner on Go On. As the track emerges from its introduction the vocals become more, erm, vocal whilst there is a collision of sound as track takes hold as it buzzes just like the bee on the artwork. There isn’t enough shambling, fuzzy noise pop around these days or if there is I have yet to discover it. Thankfully Peachier dish up five tracks that easily fit that criteria. Mixing up punk, twee and what knows else they rush through five songs in breakneck speed with the longest track clocking in at just 1m36s. It gets even better when they put a “poppier” slant on their songs with Peachier and No Problem reminding me of the likes of The Rosehips, Bubblegum Splash and The Shop Assistants. Subway surfing? Texan band Trauma Ray deliver two contrasting variations on the shoegazing theme on their latest single. wmd errs on the side of traditional sounding shoegazing until the noise-rock guitars kick in. Grind features a tasty blend of shoegaze, post-rock, psychedelia and also includes some hardcore punk guitars as the band refuse to be constrained.
