Soma Cake – The Longest Hug

I missed the latest EP from Reynosa’s Soma Cake when it came out last month but now it’s got a release on Stupid Decisions, that excellent label which promotes music from the band’s home country Mexico as well as Central and South America. It’s the follow up to 2018’s Girls Bite Harder album and the band continue down the road to melancholy. Fusing dreampop, post-punk and shoegaze the guitars are ably supported by the drum machine/sequencer whilst the songs tell stories full of gloom and woe. Lyrics such as “I couldn’t be happier to die by your kiss”, “feeling empty … Continue reading Soma Cake – The Longest Hug

HoneyHead – A Kind Of Isolation

Russian band HoneyHead have released their new EP entitled A Kind Of Isolation which fuses indie-rock and shoegaze. The songs are enhanced by noise but are tuneful none the less and the singer/guitarist refuses to let her voice be overawed by the guitars. Of the three tracks here it’s the new version of 2017’s Rollercoaster that shines with the polish giving the guitar extra intensify and making the vocals even more attractive than they already were. A fine alt-rock EP. Facebook Continue reading HoneyHead – A Kind Of Isolation

Sicayda – It Changed

It Changed is the first in a series of single drops before the band release their next EP or album. It’s a track that was written a couple of years ago and despite not appearing on their debut EP the band write that it’s a “fan favorite” and they “finally feel it has reached its full potential as a song”. I can see why it ‘s a favourite as it’s a feisty track mixing post-punk and shoegaze to great effect whilst the energetic vocals give the song another dynamic. Rousing and pleasing! Night Hikes – Belltown (Single Version)

Belltown is the third single to be taken from the forthcomimg Chalice album and it could be the best one yet from this two piece band from Seattle. There is a real sense of story telling here as the very strong vocals take centre stage leaving the guitars and synths to shimmer in the background whilst the drums keep the song on track. To put it mildly Belltown is a very impressive single indeed. Facebook Continue reading Night Hikes – Belltown (Single Version)

The Angel Makers – Little Deaths

Little Deaths is one of two EPs released this month by Colchester’s The Angel Makers who have also recently expanded their line up. We were treated to a taster track in the shape of Too Late last month which whetted the appetite. Previously I described the band’s music as shoegaze, psychedelic and melancholic. On this EP those first two descriptions have long gone being replaced by programming which gives the first three tracks here a mechanical, robotic feel. The songs also sound devoid of any emotion despite the voice of Shauna Kelly. If that’s the effect they were aiming for … Continue reading The Angel Makers – Little Deaths
