Various Artists – YLLWSPCL: Bandung Pop Darlings The Mixtapes

A solid compilation featuring and reflecting on bands over the years (1995-2015) from Bandung, Indonesia. It’s amazing how many of these bands look towards to the UK for inspiration and some of these tracks cover Britpop, C86 and Madchester. The compilers apologise for the lack of “high fidelity” in some of these recordings but that’s not a negative for me as these contributions are a snapshot in time as demonstrated on the likes of Old and Grey by Peewee and Sadford Lads Club crossing JAMC and the Wall Of Sound on Dan (Sheila on 7). It’s not all guitar based … Continue reading Various Artists – YLLWSPCL: Bandung Pop Darlings The Mixtapes

Various Artists – New Wave Of Hype

Indonesian label Dismantled have put together a compilation featuring five bands on their roster covering songs by The Wake. The first three songs are taken from The Wake’s output on Sarah Records whilst the final two tracks are taken from releases on Scan 45 and Factory Records. They are pretty good efforts. Les Mains Immaculees cover of Carbrain works really well as does The Sensitives’ gruff cover On Our Honeymoon. New Wave Of Hype is available digitally from Dismantled on a pay what you want basis or on extremely limited CDR from Heaven Punks. The Wake’s music can be purchased … Continue reading Various Artists – New Wave Of Hype

Support Women In Punk

Support Women In Punk is a new compilation series which promises “a new compilation every 11th day of each month, 11 tracks, 11 bands, 11 female voices.” The tracks seem to be compiled from releases over the past year or so and could well be a worthy “modern” successor to the epic A Reference Of Female-Fronted Punk Rock compilation. It started in February of this year and whilst we await volume four here are my pick of the first three compilations, all of which are available for free or on a pay what you want basis. Get them from here. … Continue reading Support Women In Punk

Compilation Week – TBTCI Dives Into Asian Sounds

The Blog That Celebrates Itself Records (TBTCI) specialises in producing compilation tribute album whether to an artist, label or even part of the world. This latest compilation is a roundup of the Asian Scene and includes both covers as well as new or recent original recordings. Musically the album contains indiepop, shoegaze and dreampop. Standout tracks come from Indonesian noise pop outfit See The Eye, Chinese Shoegazers Dear Eloise and Jaapn’s Fluffytails with a gorgeous cover of Lemon’s Chair’s SWallowtail. However Indonesian post-punk outfit Pullo win it for me Round The Bed complete with Ian Curtis style vocals. It’s a … Continue reading Compilation Week – TBTCI Dives Into Asian Sounds

Compilation Week – El Sonido Del Río Hablador (Vol.1)

El Sonido Del Río Hablador (Vol.1) is a twenty track compilation of Peruvian indiepop recordings from 2000-2009 which is well worth investigating. Some of these tracks are pretty raw, some are too bloody twee and some may not even meet the purists idea of what indiepop actually is. However, the further we head into the track listing the quality gets better and there is much to enjoy such as the Field Mice inspired Moon Over Soho, Numen’s excellent Losing You, Ambarina’s dreamy Tambourine and the instrumental Noodles At Bingo’s by Callahan. Highlight for me though is Agnes dice by Subterráneos … Continue reading Compilation Week – El Sonido Del Río Hablador (Vol.1)

Compilation Week – Chiaroscuro. Italogaze 2018

Italian labels Seashell Records and Vipchoyo Sound Factory have come together to produce this compilation which gathers 13 new tracks from the Italian underground shoegazing scene. Whilst bands such as Stella Diana, Mary’s Restless Dream and RevRevRev were previously known to me the majority aren’t and this is a good starting point for the scene which has been affectionately labelled as Italogaze. And of the bands who I haven’t heard previously? I really enjoyed the post-punk meets shoegaze vibes of Electric Floor with I Made It Up whilst Klam, who have been around since 2012, delight with the quirky Begging … Continue reading Compilation Week – Chiaroscuro. Compilation Week – Indietracks Compilation 2018

The UK’s premier DIY-pop/indiepop festival is approaching fast as one of the Midland Railway Centre’s restored steam trains. There are over 50 bands playing, including two Sarah Records bands, with British Sea Power headlining on the Saturday night. As in previous years there is a cut price compilation available featuring 40 of the artists playing including the likes of Night Flowers, Melenas, Even As We Speak, Boyracer, LInda Guilala, Tinsel Heart and many more. I have not been for a few years now so this is the nearest I am getting – for now! Indietracks takes place between 27th and … Continue reading Compilation Week – Indietracks Compilation 2018

Compilation Week – The Spirit of ’82... Alcopop! Records Summer Sampler 2018

A right mixed bag this one and to be fair that’s what compilations should be about. The fuzzy and noisy pop contingent lead the way (Happy Accidents, Spook School) and Kississippi’s indiepop is a delight. There are also good efforts from itoldyouiwouldeatyou and Youth Man, both of which have post-punk elements about them. However the rest leave me a bit nonplussed and I don’t think I ever want to hear Tubelord again. Given the football themed sleeve this compilation is certainly a game of two halves. You can get it for nowt from here. Facebook Continue reading Compilation Week – The Spirit of ’82... Alcopop! Records Summer Sampler 2018

Compilation Week – Paranoia Musique Vol. 2

Paranoia Musique Vol. 2 is the second volume (guess what the first was called?) wrapping up the darker side of post-punk to be released this year by the label of the same name. The Brazilian Paranoia Musique has scoured the globe for ya and there are contributions from South America, Asia and Europe. There are a couple of dubious entries here (isn’t there always?) but these are levelled out by excellent contributions from Diktatur, Gangue Morcego and the wonderful Makaria whom I would not heard otherwise. And that’s the point of compilations is it not? So if gothic post-punk inspired … Continue reading Compilation Week – Paranoia Musique Vol. 2
