The Fireworks – Dream About You

The Fireworks release their new single Dream About You next week. It’s also their first material with new vocalist Beth Arzy (Trembling Blue Stars/Lightning in a Twilight Hour/The Luxembourg Signal). Thankfully the change of singer does not affect the band’s brand of fuzzy, sometimes noisy, indie pop. All three tracks here are corkers but it’s Better Without You Now that stands out for me especially given its retro sound and the joint girl/boy vocals shining throughout. It wouldn’t sound out of place on one of Cherry Red’s recent eighties indie-pop compilations. Get it! It’s available on 7″ from Opposite Number … Continue reading The Fireworks – Dream About You

Red Rosie – Red Roses

A bit tongue twister this one if you say the band name and song title too fast. Two versions of the same song here. The EP mix is the rawer of the two being somewhat noisy with shouty female vocals whilst the single version is scaled down musically with the instruments shining through. Additionally, the vocals are more harmonious with both male/female voices being both gentle and dominant at the same time. It’s a win-win situation and I cannot wait to hear more. Blonde on Blonde

I am old enough to remember the term Blonde Movement, coined by then Melody Maker writer Chris Roberts back in the day, to describe a late 1980’s musical movement which was defined by the hair colour of vocalists of The Primitives, Darling Buds, Transvision Vamp and to a lesser extent Birdland! Amazingly the first two bands from that list are still releasing music a quarter of a century later. The Primitives for a number of years now whilst The Darling Buds have just released their first new material for almost 25 years. The former release a new EP on Elefant … Continue reading Blonde on Blonde

Something For The Weekend? Three from Kosmonaut

And onto this week’s pack of three. Kosmonaut, the band who feature ex-members of Bulldozer Crash, have released records their singles on esteemed labels such as Matinee Recordings, Firestation and Cloudberry Records. They recently released a number of tracks before, during and after the last weekend’s Easter/bank holiday weekend. Here are my three picks taken from the eight tracks released, all of which covered different styles and influences. Day In The Sun The experimental electronica one…… Debbie Harry’s Smile The punk pop one…….. Losing Friends The maudalin, guitar one….. You can buy all the tracks digitally from here. And here is a … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three from Kosmonaut

Kamikaze Girls – Berlin

Berlin is the first single to be taken from the forthcoming debut album from the Kamikaze Girls entitled Seafoam. It didn’t grab me in the the same way as Hexes or Stiches from last years SAD single but their brand of shouty noise pop/riot grrrl is always going to win me over in the end. Seafoam will be released in June via Big Scary Monsters (UK/EU) or Wiretap Records (US). You can also pre-order it digitally from the band. The band will be playing at the DIY pop fest taking place in London between 28-30th. More details can be found … Continue reading Kamikaze Girls – Berlin

Colour Of Spring – Frail

Leeds based shoegazers Colour of Spring latest track encompasses all the essential ingredients associated with that genre. Slow build up, shimmering guitars, hushed vocals and a cinematic ending. Given, how poor the 2017 version of Ride are, embrace the pretenders to the throne instead. You can find Frail on the first volume of the 2017 Clue club monthly singles subscription. Mixing It Up………….

A mid-April mix for your listening pleasure. Click here to take you to a Playmoss playlist featuring these and other tracks. The Death Of Pop – Busy With The Boys A track that takes a few listens to get into. Not sure what that annoying dib-be-do (sic) sample is doing in there either but it all comes good in the end! Facebook Youthmemory – City Flipside of their new single Neo Tokyo. Japan’s Youthmemory “go” all Radio Dept. and dancey shoegaze on us to great effect. Superb. Did I mention it was superb? Rob Coffinshaker’s Underground Fire – Underground Fire

Rob Coffinshaker has been making goth inspired music since the 1990’s but this is his debut release under the Rob Coffinshaker’s Underground Fire name. Both sides cover the territory he has visited before. Underground Fire is a catchy rockier track whilst flip side Black Hole rides deep into gothic western mode. Ye hah! It’s out now on 7″ from Ultraljud Records. Facebook Continue reading Rob Coffinshaker’s Underground Fire – Underground Fire

Slugger – Stay Loose

Possibly the first ever release I have bought from an artist who hails from Dorking but this EP isn’t a bad place to start. There are four tracks covering a mix of post-punk, lo-fi and DIY noise pop complete with scowling vocals that sometimes sound like they are sprawled in their delivery. Trails is my pick of the bunch here but to be fair there is not a filler track across the whole EP. Worth a listen as it February’s Barb EP. Get it from Bandcamp.
