Jetstream Pony – Out Of Reach

Here is a demo from Brighton/Croydon based Jetstream Pony. It’s the project of Shaun Charman (Wedding Present/Popguns/Fireworks) and also in the line up also features Beth Arzy (Trembling Blue Stars/Luxembourg Signal/The Fireworks) on vocals, Matthew Rimell (The Fireworks) on additional guitar, Kerry Boettcher (Turbocat) on bass and Sara Boyle on drums. Nice bit of cut and pasting that. So what’s it sound like you say. Well (if you cannot be bothered to press play) it mixes indiepop and post-punk which gives the track a strong retro vibe but also manages to give it a new coat of paint so that … Continue reading Jetstream Pony – Out Of Reach

The Popguns – So Long

It’s been a quiet couple of years for The Popguns since 2014’s Pop Fiction album and subsequent singles especially if you ignore last year’s side project The Perfect English Weather and the hit & miss album Isobar Blues. The good news is that they are back and June will see the release of the new album Sugar Kisses. So Long is the first single taken from the album and it features their trademark, infectious jangle pop sound. What’s not to like? It’s currently available as a free download so hurry! Sugar Kisses will be out on Matinee Recordings. Pre-order it … Continue reading The Popguns – So Long

Port Sulphur feat. James Kirk – Orient Express

On their last release Port Sulphur enlisted Davy Henderson (Fire Engines, Win plus more!) and Vic Godard (Subway Sect). On this release they are joined by James Kirk, once of Orange Juice, who co-wrote the track, plays guitars and sings. He is joined by Ken McCluskey (The Bluebells) who plays harmonica to great effect. It’s a brilliant song that harks back to the golden age of Scottish post-punk in a triumphant manner. The oriental sounding guitars and the Kirk’s vocals draw the listener straight in. Everything else is a bonus. I didn’t think they could top January’s The Lane single … Continue reading Port Sulphur feat. James Kirk – Orient Express

Is Bliss – Into A Dream

I have always liked droning music and as I get older as find myself being drawn to it even more. Into A Dream by Is Bliss is a fine example mixing psychedelia with hypnotic and dreamy melodies that draws its inspiration from the likes as 80’s bands such as Loop and Spacemen Three, krautock and shoegaze. My only complaint is that it could have been a bit longer so we could hear that sitar for even more. Into A Dream taken from the The Honeycomb Explosion EP which is released via Club AC30 on the 19th May. It’s available as … Continue reading Is Bliss – Into A Dream

Wedding Camp – Clear Fizzy Things

Clear Fizzy Things (surely Clear FUZZY Things thanks to the guitars) consists of four noisy tracks with only one making it over the two-minute mark – just! Mixing garage, indie and a lo-fi DIY attitude these punk-pop tracks certainly make an impression over their six and a bit minutes thanks to the aforementioned guitars, driving drums and the excellent vocals. Me like…… Available on cassette from Dadstache Records or digitally on a pay what you want basis from the band. Facebook Continue reading Wedding Camp – Clear Fizzy Things

Kidsmoke – And Mine Alone

I cannot say I have really been grabbed by Kidsmoke. Maybe I expect more from a band who write that “the band play indie-pop inspired by The Smiths, Joy Division”. I found tracks like previous single Waves to be a bit turgid (for the want of a better word) but I persist because their recent cover art is so eye catching. Now they have made a track that has caught my ears too in the shape of And Mine Alone. Twisting and mesmerising guitars combine with effortless, sometimes dreamlike, vocals resulting in a damn fine indiepop tune. Good things come … Continue reading Kidsmoke – And Mine Alone

Fawns Of Love – Who Cares About Tomorrow

Given that one of their previous musical guises was called Peppermint Kisses it’s not too much of a surprise comparisons made with the Cocteau Twins on The Fawns Of Love debut LP Who Cares About Tomorrow especially given the vocals of Jenny Andreotti. Mind you she credits Sparks, who the band are massive fans of, for her vocal style rather than Elizabeth Fraser. Over the course of the album I also hear hints of New Order (check those Peter Hook style bass rifts), My Bloody Valentine and, in the case of the percussion, Psychocandy era Jesus and Mary Chain. To … Continue reading Fawns Of Love – Who Cares About Tomorrow

Waxahatchee – Silver

Silver has got a few people on t’net excited from what I have read in recent weeks. I have avoided it until now but playing it back it’s not hard to see why some folks reckon it’s one of the best tracks of the year so far. The guitars create a stormy effect giving sanctuary to the philosophic lyrics and the sometimes drawling, but soothing, vocal style. It’s good but track of the year? Remind me of that in December! Silver is the first single taken from Waxahatchee’s forthcoming fourth album Out In The Storm which is being released in … Continue reading Waxahatchee – Silver
