Romero – Honey

Romero hail from Melbourne and this single is their debut release. And what a way to start. Honey is a blast. It’s like one of those old 7″ singles I have in my record boxes being an injection of power pop similar to the type that followed punk. It’s loud and raw with strong garage style female vocals. It’s backed with Neapolitan a track that comes over as one of those melodic three cord anthems coupled with a side order of blues inspired garage rock. The energy which comes off these two tracks should leave you jumpin’ and smokin’. Honey … Continue reading Romero – Honey

The Sundries – Magic Johnson EP

The Sundries are an indiepop outfit from my current manor, South East London. They write that they are inspired by the likes of Belle & Sebastian and Allo Darlin’, being together for a few years now. I believe that the Magic Johnson EP is their debut outing. It certainly is their first release as a full band. Listening to the EP that latter influence is certainly true. The tracks err on the indie folk side of things but have too many ukuleles in for liking, reminding me of the days when every band and their dog had one. Mind you, … Continue reading The Sundries – Magic Johnson EP

Michigan’s Don’t have announced the details of their debut album Lightning Slow which is to be released on March 7th 2020 via Dreamy Life Records & Music. It contains eight songs which have been mixed and mastered by Fred Thomas from Saturday Looks Good To Me amongst others. The band have made available a preview track in the shape of I Don’t Care. It’s a thriving indie-pop track that mixes melodic guitars, synths and the voice of Frankie Ma to great effect. The Churchhill Garden – In Light

You know you are in for a treat when Andy Jossi’s The Churchhill Garden team up with Krissy Vanderwoude who once again supplies the lyrics and voice. The combination of that voice and Jossi’s guitars is always one to look forward to as together they produce a fantastic array of sounds. Vanderwoude’s voice is dominant, giving her own words justice. They are never undermined by the fuzzy guitars which are left to produce their own wall of sound as they play out whilst the vocals fade away. If you are looking for a one word description it’s gorgeous. Amazingly available … Continue reading The Churchhill Garden – In Light

Red Sleeping Beauty with Cristina Quesada – Mi Amor

Red Sleeping Beauty have reworked their 2016 single Mi Amor with Spanish pop singer Cristina Quesada on vocals. It’s not the first collaboration between the two having previously worked on last summer’s Chicas De Madrid single. On this version the synths sound lower and deeper whilst Quesada’s amazing varied vocal style, which range from the childlike to the spoken, give the song additional dimensions when comparing against the original. It’s backed with a Fuerteventura Version and is available digitally from the Red Sleeping Beauty bandcamp page. Cristina Quesada (Facebook) Red Sleeping Beauty (Facebook) Continue reading Red Sleeping Beauty with Cristina Quesada – Mi Amor

Neyemia Grue – Blue-Hearted

Neyemia Grue are a dream-pop band who hail from Sumy in the Ukraine. The Blue-Hearted EP is the follow up to 2017s Revelations single and features five tracks. The songs veer between the lively and the dreamy, sometimes both, but regardless of the speed of the songs it’s the female vocals stand out. As the vocalist sings in her native tongue I have no idea what is being sung but I get the impression from the song titles that the words err on the side of melancholy. I find that her voice reminds me of Alison Shaw from The Cranes … Continue reading Neyemia Grue – Blue-Hearted

Lawnchair – Go-Karting

The second EP from Californians Lawnchair carries on in pretty much as the same as their first and features four tweepop songs with the longest song running in at 1m 24s. They open with the instrumental New 1 with lo-fi guitars mixing with surf-pop whilst the title track is a charming affair with the female vocals giving the song more of a hint of a track from the C86 era. I Went Out strums it’s way into your affection and the tuneful closing track Daddy is over before it began. My only gripe is that at times I struggled to … Continue reading Lawnchair – Go-Karting

Clubwater – Adult Angst

Clubwater are a band from Bandung, Indonesia and I believe, unless I am mistaken, that Adult Angst is their first song for a few years now. It’s a catchy track that draws on influences from the past using them to shape the track into a well crafted indiepop song. An EP, from which the song is taken, follows later this year on Shiny Happy Records. The artwork is fantastic, reminding me of New Order’s imagery from their last tour. Grab the track from here. Midweek Catch Up

Australian indiepop outfit Egoism have a new single out. Titled You You it’s about “someone in my life causing me a lot of pain and I wrote this when I was finally trying to get away”. Despite the pain it’s catchy and, empathy aside, I wish some break ups in my life had been as tuneful as this. Get it from here. Bedroom Poppers Wake In June released a new song last week. It’s called Light Phaser and it’s full of those melodies and hooks we have learnt to enjoy so well. There are also some new swirling noises thrown … Continue reading Midweek Catch Up
