Molly – Weep, Gently Weep (Maps Remix)

Austrian band Molly are now signed to London’s Sonic Cathedral which is the ideal home for their spacious shoegaze sound. They released their debut album All That Ever Could Have Been back in June and one of my favourite tracks from that release (there are a few!) Weep, Gently Weep is now out in a remixed form. Some people moan about remixes and complain that it means the original is far from perfect. Nah! Whilst some remixes are no more than a cash cow I like a well done remix which emphasises part of a song or alters the original … Continue reading Molly – Weep, Gently Weep (Maps Remix)

Something For The Weekend? Three From Today’s Inbox

This weeks pack of three features three bands whose latest tracks turned up in today’s very busy Bandcamp inbox…. Egoism – What Are We Doing? Australians Egoism make catchy indiepop/dreampop tunes and What Are We Doing? is no exception. Featuring addictive vocals and a hook laden melody, it’s their best song to date to these ears. Facebook Newmoon – Collide Into Me I have not heard Belgian band Newmoon, who have been around for a few years now, before. That’s a shame as Collide Into Me is a lovely, gentle dreampop song, despite the maudlin words, that tugs at ones … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three From Today’s Inbox

Tara – Wander

For their second track New York based Tara wanted to make a danceable track with the same instruments/approach they used on their first single Second Guess. Parts of the Wander remind me of any number of tracks which were all the rage in the indie dance clubs circa 1988-1991 whilst, for those not as old as me!, other parts emphasise the blissful harmonies and ethereal vocals heard on the aforementioned first single. Which ever way you look (listen?) at it, it’s a pleaser. Facebook Continue reading Tara – Wander

Soft Blue Shimmer – Nothing Happens Here

Los Angles based Soft Blue Shimmer have got the title of this release wrong because there is plenty happening on their debut EP! Encompassing most, if not all spheres, of both dreampop and shoegaze the five tracks here range from the ethereal to noisy. The vocals are careful, delivered gradually as the guitars twist and warp. The blissful Dream Beam Supreme is my pick of the bunch but here is plenty more here/hear to excite! The Nothing Happens Here EP is available on cassette and digital formats from the band’s bandcamp page. Facebook Continue reading Soft Blue Shimmer – Nothing Happens Here

The Records I Like Mix July 2019

A new mix compiling tracks from the past month or so. Plenty of C86 influenced music this time alongside the usual mix of shoegaze, janglepop and alt-rock. Full Tracklisting: Death Of Heather – Mind It’s a song that features slow simmering guitars that echo profoundly alongside hushed vocals which sing of someone who isn’t out of mind but yet isn’t here or there. The Proctors – Letters To The Girl And what a belter we have on our hands, well ears! Jangling guitars, catchy boy/girl vocals and a melody to die for. Holy Now – It Will All End In Tears … Continue reading The Records I Like Mix July 2019

Sicayda – Sown

I mentioned Go On by Sicayda towards the end of last month. The band have now released the full EP that Go On was taken from in the shape of Sown. It features five tracks which err on the noisier side of alt-rock/shoegaze. The songs are varied by pace which works and blends well across the whole EP. For example Struggle Bug is a full on noise “fest” but then I am caught off guard by the melodic, gentle ending. Two’s is short and rocky and closer Asleep is a predominately instrumental slow burner which builds up until it’s flame … Continue reading Sicayda – Sown

Strangers In My House – Words

Kraków based Strangers In My House haven’t done things by halves on their debut track Words. It’s an epic, sometimes dreamy shoegaze track which keeps flowing in the right direction. The highlight is the unique vocal style which I don’t normally associate with shoegaze, being almost dramatic in places. They initially had me a bit suspect, but they won me over in the end as they found the right balance to blend in with the guitars and percussion. An interesting debut to say the least! Continue reading Strangers In My House – Words

Sicayda – Go On

Opening with some ethereal, almost lost, vocals complete with pounding percussion and swirling guitars there is only going to be one winner on Go On. As the track emerges from its introduction the vocals become more, erm, vocal whilst there is a collision of sound as track takes hold as it buzzes just like the bee on the artwork. Taken from the forthcoming EP Sown it suggests that good things could be coming. Yeah go, on Sicayda. Go On! Facebook Continue reading Sicayda – Go On
