September Round Up Time!

I have been a bit slack on posting these past couple of weeks but I have some good excuses for that! Firstly I have set up a new record label with my Sleeping Today Promotions collaborator. I have also been helping promote the next Culture Bunker night which takes place on October 22nd and it will also be part of the #keepingitpeel events for 2016. And on to getting back on track and the music that has been grabbing me of late. Indiepop supergroup (?) Tangible Excitement! will  be releasing a new 7″ single shortly on Freakscene (UK & Europe) … Continue reading September Round Up Time!

Strange Passage – Shine and Scatter

I have to say that the Shine and Scatter by Massachusetts based Strange Passage is one of the best debut releases I have heard on Bandcamp this or any other year. There are no fillers on this four track EP and the music harks back to the when UK guitar bands were breaking out from the shadow of post punk. The deadpan vocals of singer/guitarist Renato Montenegro are another plus as he scowls through the thriving, jangling guitars at will. Immense…… Shine and Scatter is available on cassette and digital formats from bandcamp. Continue reading Strange Passage – Shine and Scatter

Something for the Weekend….

Another three pack for your discovery/enjoyment etc. The first two featured in the recent podcast and it’s only fair to give them more of a mention. The Lads Mags – The Future’s Done Excellent 1960’s girl band influenced garage from Canadian’s The Lad Mags. Of the two tracks available it’s opener Bed of Bones that does it for me and I stupidly gave it the wrong title in the aforementioned podcast – now corrected. Reagrdless of what it is called it’s an excellent track. It’s available as a free download/pay what you want from their bandcamp page. Pale Spectres – Your Boyfriend’s Girlfriend

Excellent indiepop from Paris that harks back to times gone by especially on the guitars that have a bit of the “Emma’s House” about them. It’s very catchy and infectious, which funny enough, is just like the cold I have at the moment. Listening to this though is far better than taking Lem-Sip! Pre-order from here. Candy – Azure

Excellent bedroom pop from Melbourne’s Candy which is the solo project of Calum Newton from Lunatics on Pogosticks. The songs here are like a journey through indiepop with echoes of the likes of C86 and Sarah Records amongst others being heard. Indeed songs like Reflections of U sound like they come from Glasgow rather than Melbourne. It’s pretty good and I will be checking out his previous work. It’s available on cassette (70 copies only!) from Slovakian label Z Tapes or get it digitally from Candy’s bandcamp page on a pay what you want basis. Various Artists – American Sole

I have been intrigued by Plastic Fish Records since coming across Colour of Spring’s debut release. It’s a Leeds based label and I have come across a compilation they released back in October 2014 which highlights bands from home, across the pond and Europe. It’s worth a listen and the Beach Youth track is bloody amazing! Strangely it is not available on Bandcamp (please!) and is only available for purchase via i-tunes at time of writing. You can stream it at Spotify as well. Facebook Soundcloud Continue reading Various Artists – American Sole

Peru – Sent To Saltcoats / Time On The Clock

The opening fifteen seconds of Sent To Saltcoats suggest we could have a Northern Soul floor stomper on our hands before it merges with a jangling indiepop sound. Flip side Time On The Clock is full of rhyming guitars that bounce along in conjunction with frontman Brian’s strong and distinctive vocals. An excellent single all round. The single is out now on Archdeacon Of Pop Records in 7″ and digital formats. Facebook Continue reading Peru – Sent To Saltcoats / Time On The Clock

Clearing The Decks

I have bookmarked a lot of music to mention but time prevents me from writing about them all individually so this post is a round up of them all serving as my must buy list too! Note: if you want to listen to a companion playlist to this post head over here. The Hundredth Anniversary released their Wreckers EP back in March. Not sure why I didn’t mention it then as it’s great. Another great release on Oddbox Records. Spanish indie poppers Band A Part have a compilation of their early material and demos out on Elefant Records. It’s a … Continue reading Clearing The Decks
