Lightning Bug – The (L)onely Ones

The new single from New York’s Lightning Bug is a magical moment for these ears. The Onely Ones mixes dreampop, shoegaze with ambient and experimental music. They then push the boundaries out even further on The Lonely Ones which ventures deeper into ambient territory which includes some “dubby” moments alongside bursts of white noise. There is no need for me to gush any further as the music speaks for itself. The (L)onely Ones is out now on Fat Possum Records. Facebook Continue reading Lightning Bug – The (L)onely Ones

Hey Elbow – Nurture/Aptitude

There are a few bands that operate outside imposed boundaries and constraints – self or otherwise. Of the top of my head, bands such as Haiku Salut, The Leaf Library and more recently Dummy fall into that group. I can now add Swedish band Hey Elbow into that mix. Late to the party as ever as the band have been going for a few years now I have been exposed to them via their new single Nurture/Aptitude. The band combine ambient, experimental and pop to mould a novel and, at times, unique sound. The vocals are woven like thread during … Continue reading Hey Elbow – Nurture/Aptitude

Palm Haze – Walk Away

The new track from Vancouver based Palm Haze revisits David Bernstein’s 80’s-era ballad You Walk Away. Never having heard the original basis of this song I got stuck in. Musically Walk Away is fuzzy, distorted and atmospheric whilst the vocals are restful but sorrowful. As for the original. Nah. I couldn’t be bothered to find it as my guess would be that it would spoil this lovely but bleak, drifting soundtrack piece. Facebook Continue reading Palm Haze – Walk Away

Dummy – Dummy EP

Dummy, the band led by ex Wildhoney member Joe Trainor, have released their self titled debut EP. It’s a great blend of styles featuring noise pop, shoegaze, fuzzy guitars, drone and ambient not to mention some psychedelic pop. Lead track Angel’s Gear has that in abundance, wowing me back in January and I have been waiting for this EP ever since! The kosmische influenced Avant-Garde Gas Station follows which switches from slow building moogs and hushed vocals before expanding into a crescendo of noisy guitars. Slacker Mask is up next with a mix of fuzzy indiepop and krautrock that takes the … Continue reading Dummy – Dummy EP

The Angel Makers – Little Deaths

Little Deaths is one of two EPs released this month by Colchester’s The Angel Makers who have also recently expanded their line up. We were treated to a taster track in the shape of Too Late last month which whetted the appetite. Previously I described the band’s music as shoegaze, psychedelic and melancholic. On this EP those first two descriptions have long gone being replaced by programming which gives the first three tracks here a mechanical, robotic feel. The songs also sound devoid of any emotion despite the voice of Shauna Kelly. If that’s the effect they were aiming for … Continue reading The Angel Makers – Little Deaths

Sometimes….

Just mentioning one band a day or every other day isn’t enough especially with how much I listen to and the way I tend to witter on. Oh well. Luckily I can work with my headphones on so here is a midweek three pack! Pia Fraus – Sweet Sunday Snow The veteran Estonian shoegazers return with a new single that is bundled with three remixes and is also a taster for their forthcoming sixth album. The single edit is a shimmering laid back track which will soon have you wandering through dreamland. Listening to The Picnic remix I wonder if … Continue reading Sometimes….

The Leaf Library – Hissing Waves

I enjoyed the Monument Series released earlier this year which was the side project works of members of The Leaf Library. Now the band will be releasing their new and second album, entitled The World Is A Bell, next month. Hissing Waves is the first track to be lifted from the album and it’s a hypnotic, vibrating track that through it’s various folds mixes elements from a range of genres. Drone pop in it’s element. The World Is A Bell is released on 25th October 2019 and will be available in limited, vinyl, CD and digital formats. It can be … Continue reading The Leaf Library – Hissing Waves

Tokyo Tea Room – Always Tomorrow

On Always Tomorrow Tokyo Tea Room produce music that crosses dream pop, psychedelia and Balearic beats. Heavenly vocals mix it up with downtempo, sometimes dubby electronica whilst the translucent guitars do their thing. It’s almost spiritual in parts and the artwork, which reminds me of ambient cover sleeves from the early 1990s, adds to that feel. A tune as great as the band’s name!
