Records I Like 2018 – The Capsule!

If the 55 tracks in the Best of 2018 mixes/playlists were not enough I have compiled a track each from most of the releases featured on Records I Like in 2018 in a handy Spotify playlist. If you use Deezer don’t worry as here is a link to an almost identical playlist on that service. Have a great new year and I will “see” you all in 2019! Records I Like Podcast December – Best of 2018

55 tracks in my best of this year. Were they the best tracks in 2018? For me yes as they gave me plenty of plays, thoughts, meaning and enjoyment. Looking at the 55 choices my tastes have certainly changed this year. I have listened to Techno a lot more this year. Almost as much since I started listening to it 25 years plus ago and I was amazed that artists from then are still making some amazing tunes. Coldwave influenced post-punk gets stronger or maybe it’s because I am listening to and discovering more. Epic Shoegaze has also featured highly … Continue reading Records I Like Podcast December – Best of 2018

Stolen Badges – Places I’ve Been

Stolen Badges is a one-off project by Ryan Marquez of Apple Orchard and more recently Golden Teardrops. Unlike the latter, which leaned towards baroque pop, Stolen Badges sound has more of a stripped down shoegazing feel. Musically it also started to sound like a less psychedelic version of Spacemen 3 especially on James Bay and San Francisco. It’s interesting stuff and shame the project is only a one off as there are plenty of ideas here which would have been worth pursuing further. Continue reading Stolen Badges – Places I’ve Been

Seeing Hands – Seeing Hands

Newcastle’s Seeing Hands new 10″ single compiles all their releases to date from 2016’s Treat You Right to I Know You which was released earlier this year. There is also a new track in the shape of Colours which gets proceedings underway and it’s a sparkling mix of dream and jangle pop. The whole EP continues in the same vein. Guitars shimmer, synths glitter whilst the vocals spin and twirl throughout none more so than on Love You Still which echoes to the ghosts of the Cocteau Twins. Beautiful stuff and it’s an essential release any way you look at … Continue reading Seeing Hands – Seeing Hands

Night Flowers – 2000 Miles

London’s Night Flowers cover Chrissie Hynde’s poignant tribute from 1983 to fellow Pretenders founder James Honeyman-Scott on this faithful to the original version. If you know the original then I am sure you will concur with my comments but if it’s a new song to you the guitars/chimes will/still haunt no matter who is playing them. All monies from this release go to C.A.L.M (Campaign Against Living Miserably). Facebook Continue reading Night Flowers – 2000 Miles

Home Economics/Life Model – Idiots/Real Estate Split Single

I am not sure when I last heard Life Model – must be a good four or five years now. They are not fuzzy as they once were but instead deliver a more laid back and genteel version of dreampop on their two contributions here. In fact it reminds me of their long gone but never forgotten city mates The Hermit Crabs. They are joined by fellow Glaswegians and new to me Home Economics who jangle their way through their two tracks in their own unique way and one of those, Idiots, is my pick of the four here. Available … Continue reading Home Economics/Life Model – Idiots/Real Estate Split Single

Give, Give, Give Me More, More, More…..

I think this final post of the week finally sees me catching up with my bandcamp bookmarks, well the stuff I liked, for now. Lightfoils – Summer Nights (radio edit) An absolute belter of a shoegazing track. Dreamy and ethereal. Just the way I like ’em. I cannot really say any more so press play now! Edit: A longer 8 minute version can be found on the just released Chambers EP. Facebook Death of Heather – I Can Tell Bangkok’s Death of Heather build upon the promise of their July demos delivering a lovely polished dreampop effort that will be … Continue reading Give, Give, Give Me More, More, More…..
