The Raft – Xanadu (Abloom version)

I am surprised I have never mentioned The Raft on these pages before especially given how good the Jellyfish EP’s were. The band who based in Neston, UK are centred on Phil Wilson (no, not the June Brides one!), Claire O’Neill and J Pedro. Xanadu (no, not the Olivia Newton-John/ELO one!) is taken from the forthcoming album Abloom which is out later this week on Brighton’s Shore Dive Records. The track is an epic, creative dream-pop song which showcases the band at it’s strongest and is a benchmark for the rest of the album. Abloom is available in CD and … Continue reading The Raft – Xanadu (Abloom version)

Lips – Apartment

Sunday Records have compiled the two singles released by the Falmouth based band Lips last year alongside three new tracks for the band’s forthcoming self titled EP. Apartment is a searing dream pop song that soars above and beyond thanks to the vibrating guitars and graceful vocals of singer Rachel Anstis. If you didn’t get it last year get it pronto. The LIPS EP is out next month on Sunday Records. Pre-order it from here. Facebook Continue reading Lips – Apartment

Group Photos – 33RPM EP

Manchester based Box Bedroom Rebels have collated a mix of tracks taken from Californian outfit Group Photos releases last year (Frequency, Open District) alongside some new (or previously unreleased?) recordings. The tracks are a mixture of dream/indiepop and alternative rock interspersed with snippets of instruments, electronica and droning sounds that works well, blending the tracks together nicely. Highlights are the 1980s tinged Infirmary and the high speed, jangling In The Morning that steadily increases the tempo before reaching its peak. It’s an impressive EP that doubles up as a great introduction to the band if you haven’t heard them before. … Continue reading Group Photos – 33RPM EP

February Round Up #2

And the round up is on day two…. Patrick Farrugia – Too Late Patrick Farrugia has been releasing music for a few years now and the two tracks on Too Late is the first I have heard from him. Both tracks are 1980s-inspired or in the case of Oblivion 100% inspired by New Order’s Age of Consent such are the similarities between the two. Not bad then! Sadly less said about Olympiad the better. I am left wondering if it’s actually by the same person. Very MOR. Just grab the first track. Facebook Crystal Eyes/Marlaena Moore – Radical Softness – … Continue reading February Round Up #2

February Round Up #1

Before I have had even time to blink I have racked almost a century of emails in my bandcamp folder. Time to wade through some of those tracks that are piling up! Leathers – Phantom Heart Leathers is the project of Shannon Hemmett who is also a member of Canadian post-punk band Actors. Phantom Heart mixes synth pop and dark wave to great effect. Facebook Sheer – Glimpse Glimpse is the first track in almost two years from Californians Sheer. It’s worth the wait as Glimpse is a laid back alt-rock track with lovely female vocals which betray the melancholic … Continue reading February Round Up #1

Fog – Shine / DreamingDreamingDreaming

Dream-poppers Fog are a new band out of Seoul, South Korea. I enjoyed last year’s demo album The Harder We Push, The Faster We’ll All Get Outta Here and the band have now followed it up with the two tracks here. Shine sounds like a demo version of the classic Chapterhouse track Pearl whilst DreamingDreamingDreaming is a poppier effort with chiming guitars that outreach the sometimes impassive vocals. Not bad! Facebook Continue reading Fog – Shine / DreamingDreamingDreaming
