August Round Up #1

I have been ploughing through my inbox following a week away. Here are some of the best. Well Whale – She’s a Punk She’s a Punk is the debut single from Indonesian band Well Whale. Jangly and twee and no punk chords in sight. A fun indie-pop tune. Instagram Ruby Haunt – Jeune Jeune is the second single to be taken from the forthcoming album The Middle of Nowhere which is due for release at the end of the month. Reminds me of the indiepop bands Heavenly used to put out many moons ago. Mesmerising and heartfelt. Facebook Charivari – … Continue reading August Round Up #1

The Hannah Barberas – Dial H for Hannah Barberas

The Hannah Barberas follow up their recent compilation The Hannah Barberas Get Physical with a new EP. From listening to the girl band influenced opener It’s Not Over for the Heartache you know you are going to be onto a winner. The Sound of Happiness is an indie pop delight which, title aside, name checks Edwyn Collins which is rather ironic as the subsequent track Hideous is very Orange Juice like both musically and vocally. More C86 influenced indiepop follows in the shape of Hurry On Home which leads into the swinging dance hall rock n’ roll of Hula Hoop. … Continue reading The Hannah Barberas – Dial H for Hannah Barberas

Mitimitis – Abrilar

I first discovered Chilean band Mitimitis via the Goodbye Idiots II compilation that was put out on Stupid Decisions at the end of last year. After a couple of compilation appearances they released the Abrilar EP via Gemelo Parásito Records at the beginning of last month and it features four feeling lo-fi indiepop tracks. The EP opens with the instrumental and wittily named Pijamas Harvey before heading on to the twee/c86 inspired Ella Flotó Sobre Mi Y Voló Un Auto Con Su Rayo Laser. 7up is a laid back affair as is the tuneful and melodic Esteban Maravilla with it’s … Continue reading Mitimitis – Abrilar

The Records I Like Mix July 2019

A new mix compiling tracks from the past month or so. Plenty of C86 influenced music this time alongside the usual mix of shoegaze, janglepop and alt-rock. Full Tracklisting: Death Of Heather – Mind It’s a song that features slow simmering guitars that echo profoundly alongside hushed vocals which sing of someone who isn’t out of mind but yet isn’t here or there. The Proctors – Letters To The Girl And what a belter we have on our hands, well ears! Jangling guitars, catchy boy/girl vocals and a melody to die for. Holy Now – It Will All End In Tears … Continue reading The Records I Like Mix July 2019

Tampopo – Atompop

Until recently Danish indiepop act Tampopo was the work of just the one individual but since last November they have become a fully fledged band. Unless I am mistaken Atompop is their first release with this new line up. Given I have not listened to a Tampopo release since 2017s Ketchup! I was wondering what to expect. Well what I didn’t expect was how good this EP would be! Sounding like The Monochrome Set, The Loft, Television Personalities and 14 Iced Bears (check out She Blows It! for that last reference) amongst others these tracks just radiate and tug at … Continue reading Tampopo – Atompop

Jeanines – Jeanines

The self titled debut album by Jeanines takes me back to the years of my youth circa early/mid 1980s. It takes me back to the times I eagerly waited for fanzines, flexi-discs and records to drop through my door or the weekly trip to pick up the music press to excitably scour for even more things to spend my hard-earned pennies on. Not to mention the countless trips to the record shop! So much on this fantastic record reminds me of those days. The DIY ethos, the very short songs, the artwork with a distant church, the 1960s influenced tunes … Continue reading Jeanines – Jeanines

Jetstream Pony – Mitte (demo)

Brighton’s Jetstream Pony are currently working on their debut album which may, or may not, be entitled Schrammelig. I don’t speak German but Schrammelig apparently describes something between not exactly tuned and/or a rather scratchy, crooked or old sound. Which, to be fair, is the best way I can summarize the band’s latest demo offering despite Beth Arzy’s voice sounding as fine as ever. A work in progress but there are promising hints on how that album will eventually sound. Facebook Continue reading Jetstream Pony – Mitte (demo)

Terry vs. Tori – Cascais

Cascais is the latest single to be taken from the forthcoming debut album by Terry vs. Tori. It’s a lovely, sometimes whimsical song, that eases itself in to the listener’s consciousness. The song also features contributions from Foliage which makes it an indiepop dream line up if there ever was one! It’s backed with the fourth single to be lifted from the aforementioned album. On Chambré Terry vs. Tori once again demonstrate that they are the leading light for indiepop in 2019. Drawing on inspiration from c86 alongside the reignition of the sound of Labrador records from 10-12 years ago … Continue reading Terry vs. Tori – Cascais

Peachier – Life is PeachieЯ

There isn’t enough shambling, fuzzy noise pop around these days or if there is I have yet to discover it. Thankfully Peachier dish up five tracks that easily fit that criteria. Mixing up punk, twee and what knows else they rush through five songs in breakneck speed with the longest track clocking in at just 1m36s. It gets even better when they put a “poppier” slant on their songs with Peachier and No Problem reminding me of the likes of The Rosehips, Bubblegum Splash and The Shop Assistants. Subway surfing? Me like! Facebook Continue reading Peachier – Life is PeachieЯ

The Records I Like Mix June 2019

A round up of releases from late, last month, early this and more. Featuring indiepop to dreampop and janglepop to shoegaze with some noise thrown in. Enjoy! Full Tracklisting: The Reds, Pinks & Purples – Running Up Dead-End Streets Taken from the recent Desperate Parties EP. Kidsmoke – She Takes You Under If, like me, you thought the previous single Passenger was good you will be delighted by She Takes You Under with its catchy guitars, clever lyrics and striking vocals. Starry Eyed Cadet – Slow Slow is a sometimes, jangling, sometimes twee indiepop song which demonstrates the band have … Continue reading The Records I Like Mix June 2019
