This two track single with a tongue in cheek title from Jakarta’s Dismantled label is not a bad way to start 2018. Sugarsting’s Chasing Pony is a pretty damn effective and infectious track that pulls in both indiepop and indie rock complete with wonderful female vocals. Flip side Larry by Ache is a far rockier affair that took a couple of plays for me to appreciate but I certainly appreciate it now. Available from here. Continuing with the series of round ups. Underwater Obstacles – Meet Me I have really been enjoying Underwater Obstacles morose offerings of late. Meet Me is the latest track and is a great alternative gothic song. An album entitled Ghosts Of Trees is forthcoming. Wintermilk – Sonnik Ethereal shoegaze from Russia. The band have released a few songs to date but this is the first sung in their native language. Sonnik, or Dream Book in English, reminds me of The Cranes mixing it up with The Sundays and is not too dissimilar to some of Ummagma’s recent work. Lovely stuff. … Continue reading Ending 2017 #2
…For Friends is the first compilation from Box Bedroom Rebels which is a Manchester based label specialising in 7″ singles.This mammoth 33 track compilation was released back in 2015 but is still relevant two years on. It collates the labels fourteen singles and names you may have heard of include Horse Beach, Lost Tapes, Tape Waves, The Artic Flow amongst others covering dreampop, indiepop, lo-fi and shoegaze. This compilation, compiled by Belka Records who are based in Moscow and Paris, features Russian speaking bands from Russia and The Ukraine. Skip pass the dreadful first track and persevere. Only Verbludes were known to me before but after listening to this a few more will be too especially the glorious post-punk sounds of Gruppa Hmuriy and Fleece Flower as well as the indiepop of Park 17. Technically it’s still Autumn so I think I can get away with this one! Fall 2017 is the latest compilation from Slovakian tape label Z Tapes. I am not going to kid you and aside from Soft Pastels I have not heard of any of the other 26 bands featured. However there is some interesting stuff here and this release serves as a great introduction to the label. Stand out tracks include efforts from the likes of Leor Miller, Candy and Memoryville and the compilation covers bedroom pop, DIY, indiepop and lo-fi pop mixtape. This weeks pack of three features three artists from Australia. Fragile Animals – Light That Fades EP Melodic alternative/indie rock from Brisbane. Their music is further enhanced by the voice of Victoria Jenkins, who also plays bass, that gives them an edge over other bands in the genre. The title track and Home are the EP standouts. They do fall flat on their faces on the mishmash that is Smaller Circles but four decent tunes out of five ain’t bad. Available on CD or digital formats – get it from here. The new Port Sulphur digital single features the likes of James Kirk (Orange Juice) and Davy Henderson (The Fire Engines/Win). Indeed the band is the project of Henderson’s fellow Nectarine No 9 and Sexual Objects stalwart Douglas MacIntyre who also happens to be the owner of the Creeping Bent label. Back to the song itself which is a predominately guitar driven instrumental until the vocals finally fade in towards the tracks climax. It’s effective stuff.
