I think I have mentioned on these pages before that I consider the Grrls Like Us shows on Mixcloud an essential listen. Here are three tunes that stood out for me from their recent Grrls Like Us #39 show.
Wet Leg – Chaise Longue
The debut single from the duo (Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers) who hail from the Isle of Wight and who decided to start a band when they reached the summit of a Ferris wheel! They write that they have “a penchant for French disco, effervescent imaginations and a shared love of The Ronettes and Jane Birkin, through to Ty Segall and Bjork, they set about making some recordings of their own”. Chaise Long is a catchy and addictive alternative pop ride.
Le Pain – Troisième Groupe
I am guessing Los Angeles based Le Pain have a penchant for French pop too. The band, who consist of Olivia Babuka Black (vocals), Madeline Babuka Black (Drums, Vocals) and Scott Rosenthal (Guitar, Bass, Keys), sing in french on this, their debut single. It has more than a hint of the 1960s about it and is a lovely song that should make everyone feel so much better when they hear it!
tsushimamire – Beer
I thought I knew my Japanese bands but this trio, who have been going since 1999, is a new name on me. The band like beer and decided to sing about it. Next time I visit a bierkeller I hope there is a punk-pop act like tsushimamire on rather than an oompah band!
