Pinkshinyultrablast – Find Your Saint

What a tune to come back to after a three week break. The new single from Pinkshinyultrablast could well be the sound of the Cocteau Twins if they were recording now instead of thirty plus years ago. Despite slimming down to a trio the band sound more expansive here. Mixing Shoegaze and dj beats alongside the vocals of singer Lyubov this is fast becoming an instant classic to these ears. Wonderful. It’s out on 1st September via Club AC30. They play both London and Oxford in October on the 20th and 21st respectively. More details here. Distant Light – Coldwave, Darkwave, Post-Punk, Goth-Rock and Minimal Synth Vol 3

Another does of post-punk, coldwave, minimal synth and dark wave for your listening pleasure. Some excellent tracks here especially the releases from French label Unknown Pleasures which I will have to feature more of at some point! It will be a bit quiet around here over the next few weeks as holidays beckon so head to the Playmoss or Records I Like Playlists site for more tuneage until I return. Blossom Cherry Bloom Sleep – A Records I Like Playlist (July 2017 #04)

I am not sure if Playmoss is making me lazy or if it’s given me the chance to post more music that grabs me more than normal. I certainly post tracks which impress me even if the rest of that band’s output doesn’t have much of an impact on my ears. That is something I wouldn’t do previously. Anyway I will let you decide. Given that this is the fourth playlist this month July has been a cracking month for music discoveries all round and here is a selection of jangle pop, indiepop, dreampop, shoegaze and alt-rock for your listening … Continue reading Blossom Cherry Bloom Sleep – A Records I Like Playlist (July 2017 #04)

Marble Gods – Songs

The first couple of songs that open this EP are two of the finest examples of fuzzy, diy indiepop that you are likely to hear this year. Imagine Talulah Gosh mixed with This Poison or The Wedding Present and that will give you an idea of the sound. The C86 vibes continue through the remainder of the EP which, to put it in a nutshell, is short but fast, fuzzy and fun. And essential listening for any indiepop fan. Sometimes – A Records I Like Playlist (July 2017 #3)

A playlist covering the latest in indiepop, shoegaze, dreampop, riot grrl, garage and more. Plenty to listen out for here. The latest demo by Jetstream Pony is sublime and I purchased everything by Hiki based on hearing Closer for the first time. Honeyrude are new to me as well and their track The Color Blue has been a regular play this month alongside Alvvays and The Autumn Sighs. Enjoy! Ummagma – LCD

I have to admit I find Ummagma pretty frustrating to listen to at times. When they get it right they are a joy to listen to but sometimes, as in the case of the title track here, it all goes horribly wrong to these ears. LCD is a strange plodding dream pop track full of noises some of which resemble the bleeps you used to get when listening to audio streams to discourage illegal ripping. As these do not appear on the other tracks I guess that is intentional but for what purpose I am not sure. The male vocals … Continue reading Ummagma – LCD

Alvvays – In Undertow

In Undertow is the first single to be taken from Alvvays forthcoming album Antisocialites which is due out in September. It’s a thriving but bittersweet breakup song complete with fuzzy, sometimes anthem like, guitars whilst singer Molly Rankin’s vocals and lyrics are as strong as ever. A trippy video completes the mix. I cannot wait for that album….. Antisocialites is out on September 8th. Pre-order it from here. Homepage Facebook Continue reading Alvvays – In Undertow

Factice Factory – Extinguisher

French/Swiss post-punk/coldwave act Factice Factory release their new album Lines & Parallels in September. Extinguisher is the first single taken from the album and the track pays homage the band’s influences such as the likes of D.A.F and early Nitzer Ebb. Impressive stuff. The album will be a joint release on WaveTension records and Wool-E-Disc records. Extinguisher can be picked up in digital formats from bandcamp. Something For The Weekend? Three Compilations.

This week’s pack of three features three compilations that should keep you busy for this weekend and the next few come to think of it! Ghost Babes Compilation Vol.3 London based cassette label Ghost Babe Records are now onto their third compilation featuring just American bands whether they play garage, slacker rock or punk. Not heard of most of these except for the excellent Wedding Camp but already I am going to dig into the back catalogues of Lost Boy? (try searching that name on Bandcamp!) and Thick. It seems that when the cassettes are sold out the digital version … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three Compilations.

Sea Blite – Sea Blite

Extremely catchy pop music from San Francisco’s Sea Blite who have a sound that transcends through the decades. I can hear 1960’s girl bands alongside 1980’s indiepop, 1960’s garage and music from the 1990’s such as Tiger Trap, The Softies and All Girl Summer Fun Band to name but a few. It’s all lovely stuff and If tracks like Pretend and Woolly Jumper don’t have you smiling or at least tapping your feet by the end I will, erm, eat my woolly sweater! Available on cassette from Long Live Death Records or digitally from the band. Facebook Continue reading Sea Blite – Sea Blite
