Battery Point – A Memory For Today

Sarah Records revivalists Battery Point deliver another fine EP that in part pays homage to the aforementioned label. Another Year and Time are on the melodic side of dreampop/shoegaze rather than the harsh version practised by Secret Shine – see they are not paying that much homage! That does come however with their cover of Another Sunny Day’s You Should All Be Murdered which covers this classic track with a layer of jangling guitars but sadly fails to create the beauty of the original. It’s not a bad effort mind! Facebook Continue reading Battery Point – A Memory For Today

Grrrl Gang – Dream Grrrl

Grrrl Gang follow up their appearance on the recent Strawberry Punks compilation with a new track. It’s their best yet as they throw off the shackles of their influences, expanding their sound to great effect and the addition of male vocals works a treat. Whilst it could remind you of  any number of tracks it still retains originality packed with the right amount of excitement.   Another stunning indiepop track from Indonesia. It’s a free download from Kolibri Rekords but it’s worth a few bob at least. Instagram Continue reading Grrrl Gang – Dream Grrrl

Bearcats & Horrible/Adorable – Split

Bearcats deliver a catchy, sometimes sleazy (and with that title it could not be anything else) garage/riot grrrl crossover on Gutter Pussy which is worth every part of it’s 109 seconds. New to these ears are Horrible Adorable who give us a blend of rock n’ roll, surf pop and garage on Surf, Rock, Beach, Party, UFO which reminds me of the Fizzbombs around the time of their second single. Despite which side you prefer both tracks here are essential listening. Out now via Yr First Crush. Bearcats (Facebook) Horrible Adorable (Facebook) Continue reading Bearcats & Horrible/Adorable – Split

Jeanines – Demos

Two short but promising tracks from New York’s jeanines that manage to pack more in their one and a bit minutes than some of the other tracks I have been listening too recently which last 2-3 times as long. The singer sounds like a young Aggi from The Pastels (or on Buba & The Shop Assistants debut) and that may suggest to you that this is indiepop which sounds like it came from Scotland between 1983-1986. Well you would be right. I am getting impatient to hear more from this lot – more so than waiting for the next season … Continue reading Jeanines – Demos

Various Artists – Popkiss

Brazilian label The Blog That Celebrates Itself Records specialises in releasing tribute albums which are either awful or great depending on your point of view. Popkiss is the latest volume and features tributes to tracks released on Sarah Records. It’s the obvious tracks that are covered here although the lack of any Sea Urchins covers come as a surprise. Whilst some of these covers are note for note versions (and to be fair the originals are perfect) there are some good efforts by Battery Point, Waving Blue amongst others. However the standout for me so far is the Glass Arcades … Continue reading Various Artists – Popkiss
