Something For The Weekend? Three From Japan

This weeks pack of three features three artists from the “Land of the Rising Sun”. Letters To Annika – Tidal Tidal is the second track from the project of Azusa Suga (For Tracy Hyde/AprilBlue). It’s a pulsating, fast moving track and may well feature on the debut self titled EP that is due for release next month. Facebook Happypills – Monsoon I am not sure what is happening musically in Japan at the moment but this may give some clues. Letters To Annkia above proclaim that “surf rock isn’t dead” and Happypills describe Monsoon as an “indie surf rock”. The … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three From Japan

Verano Del 83 – Tus Sueños Siempre Serán Los Míos

The new EP from the Peruvian band Verano Del 83 should certainly be a must have on any twee pop fan’s shopping list. Translated as Your Dreams Will Always Be Mine it features four dreamy indie pop songs which, despite me not understanding a word, sound remarkably happy and cheerful. The standout track for me is Mi Camino Mágico which sounds like a cover of a children’s TV programme theme, turned into an indiepop classic. Is it me or does in sound like the Banana Splits tune in places? It certainly gets me smiling and suggests that having fun is … Continue reading Verano Del 83 – Tus Sueños Siempre Serán Los Míos

No Suits in Miami – What We Have

Swedish indiepoppers No Suits in Miami debut album I Hope That No One Sees Me was one of the many highlights of last year and new track What We Have cements that status with aplomb. Strong female vocals soar above the guitars which, depending on your viewpoint, are either influenced by 1981 Glasgow or 1988 Bristol. The words deal with a relationship that hasn’t worked out as the jangling melody forces it’s way into your head. Super stuff whatever the outcome. Candace – Still Phase

Candace have announced their new album will be released at the end of May 2020. It’s titled Ideal Corners and includes the leading single DM-100 and the second single Still Phase, which has just been released today. Starting off slowly with 1960s girl band influences the track soon turns into a fuzzy pop effort complete with droning and reverb laden guitars. At no point in the song do you lose track of the dreamy vocals either. If the first single was the starter Still Phase is the main course. Now please bring on the dessert in the shape of that … Continue reading Candace – Still Phase

Skytone – Without You

The music made by Canadians Skytone is a bit like Marmite with me. Last years Here and Now single was very catchy indeed but the follow up Adrift definitely left me just that. Thankfully their new song Without You definitely falls into the camp of the former. The song has a retro feel thanks to the synths and programming. These are enhanced by jangling guitars whilst the vocals remain upbeat despite the words being of a sombre nature. It’s a return to form – well to my ears anyway! Terry vs. Tori – Psychic Reader

Psychic Reader (feat. David Alonso) is the latest single to be taken from the band’s forthcoming eponymous debut long play album. It’s another slice of the beautiful and gorgeous indie pop that the band have always delivered. There is no let up in quality as it jangles it’s way into your heart. However, given it’s the 6th single to be taken from the album I hope that it means that the album it’s on it’s way very (very!) soon. Psychic Reader is out now on El Genio Equivocado or you can buy it direct from the band who have a … Continue reading Terry vs. Tori – Psychic Reader

The Belafontes – Desk Job

Melbourne’s The Belafontes have a new EP out collating their past couple of single releases (Big Man and Steppin’ Out) and a few new tracks. It’s two of the new tracks (or new to me) here that get me jumping around. 8 Bit Town is catchy, thrashy punk with the protagonist seeking departure from “this backwards town” whilst Tired deals with the monotony of everyday working life. They could well be the best tracks the band have laid down so far. Seafood is another punk-pop song where the villains are not partial to someone different whilst final track Portland sounds … Continue reading The Belafontes – Desk Job
