Lemondaze – Neon Ballroom

Originally from Cambridge but now based in London Lemondaze have been gigging for a couple of years now. Neon Ballroom is the band’s debut single and I guess all that gigging has paid off as this is a blistering effort. There is more than a nod to the the shoegazers of years past but there are also elements of those bands who followed prior to the Britpop explosion. Someone on Bandcamp makes reference to Bleach and that’s not a bad shout. If you like your shoegaze intense and noisy then Neon Ballroom should be right up your street. Fragile Animals – Waiting

I have been enjoying Australian band Fragile Animals mix of alt-rock and shoegaze these past twelve months and that does not let up on new track Waiting. Blending melodic guitars, patterned drums, catchy vocals and dejected lyrics this track reminds me of The Heart Throbs in their heyday with the voice of singer/bassist Victoria Jenkins sounding remarkably similar to that of Rose Carlotti’s. Personally, even without the aforementioned comparisons, I think it’s the band’s best moment to date. More please! Facebook Continue reading Fragile Animals – Waiting

Fog – Fictitious Fiction Fictitious

I wrote about Fog back in early February when their single Shine/Dreaming Dreaming Dreaming was released. Since then the Seoul based band have undergone a couple of line up changes and, as we start the descent towards the end of 2019, they have just released a new version of Fictitious Fiction Fictitious which originally appeared on their demo album The Harder We Push, The Faster We’ll All Get Outta Here. And what a transformation it is. Whereas the original hinted at beauty underneath, on this version it comes to the straight to the fore. When a song you liked it’s … Continue reading Fog – Fictitious Fiction Fictitious

Mo Dotti – Gravity Well

I am not sure if I do a band a disservice when I compare them against bands from my youth especially, at given my age, it skips a generation! Obviously the pointers are there for me but I do wonder if some who read these pages know what I am going on about. Why do I mention this? Well it’s because on Gravity Well Los Angeles based Mo Dotti sound, right down to the vocals, so much like Lush it’s uncanny. Of course in my world that’s a good thing and if some say that is a lazy comparison then … Continue reading Mo Dotti – Gravity Well

Rei Clone – Heaven Is Eternity

Texas based Rei Clone’s take on shoegaze is generally a noisy affair. This was demonstrated on a couple of the singles leading into their debut album Greetings From Somewhere which was released back in February. However on this, their latest single, the band have clearly moved into the ethereal side of things. Whilst Heaven Is Eternity can be just a noisy as it’s predecessors the vocals and sweeping guitar sound is reminiscent of the sound once found on 4AD and Creation. Rei Clone started the year well and they are ending it in even better shape! Facebook Continue reading Rei Clone – Heaven Is Eternity

Iris – Clementine

Clementine is the first we have heard from Canadians Iris for well over a year and it is also the first single to be taken from their forthcoming debut album Slowly, Forever. I am not sure about one of your five a day but Clementine is a track that gives you everything you could possibly want from a shoegazing track from the gleaming guitars, telling words and the emotive vocals. It’s a beautiful song. Slowly, Forever is due for release on November 15th but for now you can get Clementine from here. Facebook Continue reading Iris – Clementine

Luby Sparks – Somewhere (Robin Guthrie Remix)

I must admit that the original version of Somewhere by Tokyo based Luby Sparks, which was released last month, did not do much for these ears. However I noticed it now has been given a make over by the Cocteau Twins Robin Guthrie so I delved in. Guthrie reduces the epic guitar sound of the original, concentrating on the vocals turning the song to into a blissful, ethereal classic. Dreampop? You bet!
