Something For The Weekend? Three From Sweden

This week’s pack of three centres on three releases from Swedish artists. Lamagaia – Aurora This is epic. 16 plus minutes of krautrock /space rock/drone or whatever you want to call it. It sounds like my favourite Loop records on repeat. Available on 12″ vinyl from Sunrise Ocean Bender. Or get it digitally. Homepage Agent Blå – (Don’t) Talk to Strangers Another slab of indiepop from Agent Blå. It didn’t grab me in the same way as the previous single Strand managed to. However, it’s still a fine track none the less. It just sounds a bit out of place. Maybe there … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three From Sweden

Par Avion – Par Avion

I have been listening to a lot of compilations featuring minimal synth/coldwave tracks from the late 1970’s and early 1980’s over the past couple of months and this new EP from Ukrainian outfit Par Avion sounds like it could have jumped from any one of them. These tracks have an extreme retro feel about them none more so than the excellent Simulakra that sounds likes The Normal’s Warm Leatherette crossed with Kraftwerk’s Pocket Calculator. Another high-quality release that is amazingly available on a pay what you want basis from Bandcamp. Continue reading Par Avion – Par Avion

Something For The Weekend? Three From Russia

Here are three bands from Russia that have caught my ear recently. Июльские Дни – Колокол Google translates the band and song name as Bell by the July Days and it’s an impressive EP that romps through guitar orientated post-punk territory with unabashed abandon. The highlight for me is the powerful sounding Крутится-вертится (Spinning, Spinning). Буерак – Влюбленный Альфонс Translated as Love Alphonse by Buerak I like this as it gives post-punk a fresh lick of paint. Very catchy and with a punchy vocal style. I am already checking out their previous work. промзона 96 – гордость The band actually … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three From Russia

Records I Like Top 10 2016

Blimey. This year’s list was hard to compile given that I restrict myself to just 10 choices (self-inflicted stupidity!). I have been listening to plenty of punk, coldwave, indie-pop, riot grrrl, queercore, garage and post-punk but I think this selection is a fair reflection of my listening habits these past 12 months. Tracks missing the cut include the likes of Underworld, Joanna Gruesome, The Radio Dept., The Legends, Earth Girls,The Liminanas, Red Sleeping Beauty, Massive Attack, Jessica & The Fletchers, Vital Idles, Useless Youth, E’spaniel, Nice Try, Hate Week, Primetime, Tape Waves, The Wolfhounds, Merchandise, Slam, Blind Delon, Lad’s Mags, … Continue reading Records I Like Top 10 2016

Finishing Off….. 2016

After scrolling through my bookmarks here are some releases that deserved posts of their own but a busier solstice than usual has prevented that so please divert your ears into the direction of the following: Swimming Tapes – Set The Fire / Souvenirs Excellent debut 7″ from this London based alternative pop band. Facebook Son Bou – Cinta Indiepop from Barcelona. Out now on cassette from Snap! Clap! Facebook Kamikaze Girls – SAD Kamikaze Girls could be described as an angrier and noisier version of Curve. Stitches is a must hear. Facebook Fascinations Grand Chorus – Actor/Actress More dreamy 1960’s … Continue reading Finishing Off….. 2016

Cruz De Navajas – Demo

A sometimes rough sounding but strong never the less demo from Mexican two piece post-punk outfit Cruz De Navajas (Cross Knives). The songs lean on the darker side of the genre and if you want pointers Joy Division fronted by Siouxsie Sioux would be a good place to start but fans of Skeletal Family, early Sisters of Mercy and Red Lorry Yellow Lorry may also want to listen. There are five tracks here including a cover of The Mob’s 1983 single The Mirror Breaks but it’s Las Personas Son Bestias (People Are Beasts – thanks google) that is the standout … Continue reading Cruz De Navajas – Demo

Vital Idles – My Sentiments 7″

Not Unloved is one of the few music blogs I read on a regular basis these days and the goods news is that they now have set up a record label. The first release on the label is from Glasgow’s Vital Idles and it has set the benchmark high early doors. The tracks here sound like undiscovered gems from the late 1970’s and quite rightly draw comparisons to the like of Kleenex, The Slits, Modettes and to a lesser extent bands like Essential Logic especially on the flip side The Garden. There have been some brilliant post-punk releases this year … Continue reading Vital Idles – My Sentiments 7″

From Russia With Love

Three Russian bands for your enjoyment today including two who I have mentioned before. First up is Moscow’s Commis Voyageur whose new digital single Youth is about being young. Yeah I vaguely remember that. Anyway both tracks here, Moonlight and Submissive, are catchy synth led efforts with the former taking the glory as it is the most vigorous of the two. Available as a free download from Bandcamp. Facebook For The Empty is the new single from Herlights and like above this title does not appear on either of the two tracks that comprise it. Laidback dream pop at its … Continue reading From Russia With Love
