Closure – Journey EP

This EP has been one of my most loved discoveries of the past couple of months. It’s certainly one of the best debut releases I have heard for a while – well since Strange Passage last year.  Indie pop with a heavy post punk influence and some fantastic vocals to boot combine to make this a fantastic EP. Check out the jangletastic Would She Love Me and Slow Drive and try to deny you have heard better this year (and if you have tell me!). Essential listening……. Available on CDR from O Pamela or digitally from Let’s Kiss A Secret … Continue reading Closure – Journey EP

Not The One – A Records I Like Playlist (June 2017 #2)

I think I may have solved the problem of embedded playlists (wordpress.com does not support iframe) but with two steps instead of one. A tip on the wordpress.com support boards got me thinking about having a clickable image which brings up a pop-up player. So there you have it and this is a good post as any to try it out so without further ado here is a mix featuring of tracks previously mentioned or soon to be mentioned on this site. It covers a mix of indiepop, post-punk, shoegaze, garage and jangle pop. Enjoy! Alternatively head over to our … Continue reading Not The One – A Records I Like Playlist (June 2017 #2)

Счастливая Смерть – Ещё один день

The band name and song, as translated by Google from their native Russian, is Another Day by Happy Death. The band’s roots are firmly placed in post-punk with smatterings of coldwave and goth tinged rock dispersed throughout. As you would expect from that description it’s a melancholic and moody EP but it’s also pretty good and if you, like me, are a fan of the genre you cannot really go wrong. Stand out track for me is the epic closer Виселица (Химера) – Gallows (Chimera) that advertises all it’s influences throughout it’s six minutes plus. Available digitally from Bandcamp. Choir Division – At The Opera

The Hamburg Opera Chorsaal describe themselves as probably the world’s first and one and only choir to worship the music of Joy Division and New Order. There are some pretty dire cover versions of both bands to be found on Bandcamp but thankfully these recordings are not amongst them. The arrangements and the voices do these songs justice and it’s amazing how well they fit in a choral setting especially on Passover. Available on a pay what you want basis from Bandcamp! They also cover Atmosphere and provide us with a remixed version which works just as well, if not … Continue reading Choir Division – At The Opera

Jetstream Pony – Out Of Reach

Here is a demo from Brighton/Croydon based Jetstream Pony. It’s the project of Shaun Charman (Wedding Present/Popguns/Fireworks) and also in the line up also features Beth Arzy (Trembling Blue Stars/Luxembourg Signal/The Fireworks) on vocals, Matthew Rimell (The Fireworks) on additional guitar, Kerry Boettcher (Turbocat) on bass and Sara Boyle on drums. Nice bit of cut and pasting that. So what’s it sound like you say. Well (if you cannot be bothered to press play) it mixes indiepop and post-punk which gives the track a strong retro vibe but also manages to give it a new coat of paint so that … Continue reading Jetstream Pony – Out Of Reach

Port Sulphur feat. James Kirk – Orient Express

On their last release Port Sulphur enlisted Davy Henderson (Fire Engines, Win plus more!) and Vic Godard (Subway Sect). On this release they are joined by James Kirk, once of Orange Juice, who co-wrote the track, plays guitars and sings. He is joined by Ken McCluskey (The Bluebells) who plays harmonica to great effect. It’s a brilliant song that harks back to the golden age of Scottish post-punk in a triumphant manner. The oriental sounding guitars and the Kirk’s vocals draw the listener straight in. Everything else is a bonus. I didn’t think they could top January’s The Lane single … Continue reading Port Sulphur feat. James Kirk – Orient Express

Fawns Of Love – Who Cares About Tomorrow

Given that one of their previous musical guises was called Peppermint Kisses it’s not too much of a surprise comparisons made with the Cocteau Twins on The Fawns Of Love debut LP Who Cares About Tomorrow especially given the vocals of Jenny Andreotti. Mind you she credits Sparks, who the band are massive fans of, for her vocal style rather than Elizabeth Fraser. Over the course of the album I also hear hints of New Order (check those Peter Hook style bass rifts), My Bloody Valentine and, in the case of the percussion, Psychocandy era Jesus and Mary Chain. To … Continue reading Fawns Of Love – Who Cares About Tomorrow

Rob Coffinshaker’s Underground Fire – Underground Fire

Rob Coffinshaker has been making goth inspired music since the 1990’s but this is his debut release under the Rob Coffinshaker’s Underground Fire name. Both sides cover the territory he has visited before. Underground Fire is a catchy rockier track whilst flip side Black Hole rides deep into gothic western mode. Ye hah! It’s out now on 7″ from Ultraljud Records. Facebook Continue reading Rob Coffinshaker’s Underground Fire – Underground Fire

Something For The Weekend? Three Influenced By Joy Division……

This week’s pack of three encompasses three artists who have given themselves a tag as Joy Division on Bandcamp. Mementut – Into the shadow of God Very Gothic sounding especially the trademark vocal style and any club that wants to recreate the goth scene of 1980’s northern England could well give it a spin. It gets a bit samey for these ears although on Valyrian and Asylum there are hints at better things to come. Triebgesteuert Antriebslos – Music Is For Losers The post-punk project of a lo-fi hip-hop artist. There are some interesting ideas here and some of the … Continue reading Something For The Weekend?
