Ricky Hell – Nela Park

You may well miss this one as it rolls out in just 65 seconds. However, Nela Park is one of the catchiest songs I have heard for a long time despite the sombre lyrics. It is also the standout track on Ricky Hell’s new Blue Lips EP which contains two other two tracks both of which are also fine examples of post-punk inspired power pop. You can get it from Quality Time Records here. Continue reading Ricky Hell – Nela Park

The Records I Like Podcast – October 2018

I have been meaning to get back to using Mixcloud for a while now but I am a bit lazy and Playmoss is a doddle to use. But Mixcloud embeds in WordPress…. Anyway for this first “podcast” it features tracks mentioned on this blog, tracks from recent reissues and music I generally don’t cover. So enjoy! Full Tracklisting 1 – Pop Will Eat Itself – Sweet Sweet Pie Taken from the PWEI Def Coms 86-18 Compilation (Cherry Red) 2 – Say Sue Me – Just Joking Around The band’s current single (Damnably) 3 – Chasms – Divine Illusions Stunning yet … Continue reading The Records I Like Podcast – October 2018

Fawns of Love – Someday

Someday is the first single to be lifted from the new Fawns of Love album Permanent that will be released next year on Test Pattern Records. Somewhat remarkably Someday fuses New Order and the Cocteau Twins to great effect and the husband and wife duo of Jenny & Joseph Andreotti create an excellent tune that is ideal for the indie dance floor. I reckon it’s ripe for a remix too and Test Pattern Records have previous form in that department so lets hope something is in the offering! Homepage Continue reading Fawns of Love – Someday

Night Diving – Coldwave, Darkwave, Post-Punk, Goth-Rock and Minimal Synth Vol 11

Another healthy dose of all things post punk that should see you through this weekend. There are some incredible tracks in this mix but it’s up to you to discover them, just as I did, as I plan on covering some of these in more depth over the next week or two. Enjoy! EDIT. If the tracks skip (Playmoss bug) head to the links below. More playlists can be found here and the Playmoss page is here. Lorigun – Wild Dive

I nearly missed this gem by Brazilian indie rockers Lorigun as it is the flip side of their current digital single, Fight To Forget, which I was none to impressed with. I must of got distracted because rather than press stop it eventually moved onto this cracker of a track which reminds me of everything from A Flock Of Seagulls to The Wake whether musically or vocally. I am still not convinced by that first track but I will be digging out their first EP at some point. A new EP will be released soon on London based label Midsummer … Continue reading Lorigun – Wild Dive

September Round Up #3

Something Else – Don’t Want It Jangling guitar pop with post-punk overtones with a bit of pub-rock thrown in too. They have since released their debut album entitled An Entire Album About My Ex-Girlfriend which has been on heavy rotation recently. Facebook Theatre Royal – All Fall Forward/Better Say Goodbye Powerful guitar driven pop from Rochester, Kent linking the Medway sound and psychedelic pop of the 1960’s. Facebook The Radio Dept – Going Down Swinging The Radio Dept. continue their record of releasing anti fascist singles before general elections in their home country given the rise of the right wing … Continue reading September Round Up #3

July Round Up #2

And here is the SQL (ha ha – hint to what I do for a living) to yesterday’s post. Today’s round up concentrates the many faces of Post-Punk. Projet Marina – Rage Rage is the first single lifted from the band’s album Echos which is due for release in September. Synth pop of the highest calibre. Facebook Cult of Haze – Farewell There is a lot of quality post-punk coming out of Russia these days and this album is no exception. Harking back to the synthpop and goth pioneers of the early 1980’s Cult of Haze deliver an album that … Continue reading July Round Up #2

Guide His Steps – Coldwave, Darkwave, Post-Punk, Goth-Rock and Minimal Synth Vol 10

It’s been somewhat quiet around here this week as I have started a new job. So what better way to relax than a post-punk playlist mainly of the gloomy and melancholic kind. Click on the image to start the playlist! More playlists can be found here and the Playmoss page is here. Continue reading Guide His Steps – Coldwave, Darkwave, Post-Punk, Goth-Rock and Minimal Synth Vol 10

Something For The Weekend – Coldwave & Synthpop from Russia

This weeks pack of three concentrates on post-punk of the coldwave and synthpop varieties from Russia. Фирма-однодневка – Кабаки This is an excellent vintage sounding coldwave track that would have not been out of place in Belgium or France circa 1981. They also have an album available but I have yet to listen to that. VK.Com яблоня – мысли Female fronted infectious synthpop that sounds like parts of Man Machine if it was mixed Vince Clarke. Really liking this (the vocals are great) and they have plenty more on offer on their bandcamp page. That’s more to delve through – … Continue reading Something For The Weekend – Coldwave & Synthpop from Russia

Gizpel – No Surrender

Judging by their band photo Gizpel not only have a love of English football but the UK post punk scene too. Unlike many of their peers who pay homage to all things Sarah Records Gizpel’s music veers towards the early 1980’s indiepop sounds that was found on labels such as Rough Trade, Cherry Red, Factory et al. The likes of The Wake and The Monochrome Set certainly spring to my mind on the first listens. Grab it from here. Facebook Continue reading Gizpel – No Surrender
