The Slow Summits – Languid Belles

The Slow Summits (named after The Pastels 2013 album of the same name?) are an indiepop band from Linköping, Sweden. Languid Belles seems to be their debut release and it contains four jangling pop tunes that are reminiscent of days gone by. It’d be hard not to think of 1980s UK indie bands when listening to the EP. Off the top of my head think The Smiths, Orange Juice, The Weather Prophets, The Housemartins, The Loft, and The Wedding Present. Given that Amelia Fletcher provides backing vocals on two tracks here the latter should be no surprise. It’s an enjoyable … Continue reading The Slow Summits – Languid Belles

Torrey – Sister

Torrey is a female fronted band who hail from San Francisco and that’s all I can find out about them as for now their homepage does not offer any clues. Which, I kinda, like. Anyway Sister features six indiepop songs that need to be heard. Initial thoughts would suggest comparisons to the likes of Cults, The Aislers Set, Best Coast and amongst their peers Jeanines. There is variety too – the beautiful Summer where singer Ryann’s voice shines, the shambling Scruffy and the short and sweet pop-tastic blast that is Lean In. The other tracks carry on in the same … Continue reading Torrey – Sister

Pin Ups – Spinning

Brazilian band Pin Ups first surfaced back in 1990 releasing five albums before seemingly splitting up, after a number of line up changes, in 1998. A covers EP emerged the year before last alongside some comeback shows and now the band, with I think most of the last line up, are preparing to release their sixth album on London based Brazilian label Midsummer Madness and Fleeting Media. Spinning is the first single to be lifted from the album. It’s like stepping back twenty years to their fifth album Lee Marvin and you cannot imagine the band ever being away! It’s … Continue reading Pin Ups – Spinning

The Records I Like Mix May 2019

A bumper crop this month featuring healthy doses of indiepop, janglepop, shoegaze, dreampop and any other number of made up genres you could desire! I try to keep within a time and track limit but that has not proved possible this month so enjoy this extended mix! Full tracklisting: The Blue Dress – The Perfect Moment The Perfect Moment sounds like a track given away on a flexi-disc via fanzines of yesteryear. Dreams of Empire – Northern Lights Is Northern Lights Dreams of Empire’s poppiest moment yet? Film School – Go (But Not Too Far) I really like the deadpan … Continue reading The Records I Like Mix May 2019

宇宙ネコ子 – Kimi No Youni Ikiretara

Kimi No Youni Ikiretara seems to be the debut release from Japanese band 宇宙ネコ子 (Space Cat according to Google or is it Universe Nekoko when translated?) and features seven songs that shift from shoegaze, fuzzy pop and indiepop. With the band being female fronted it’s hard not to suggest bands such as Strawberry Story or Melys as pointers in the band’s sound. Song titles such as Like A Raspberry also suggest a fondness for 1980s UK indie and a certain West Country record label. Of the seven songs here it’s hard to pick a favourite. However, the fuzzy opener Virgin … Continue reading 宇宙ネコ子 – Kimi No Youni Ikiretara

The Muldoons – Don’t Be Like That, Girl

Scotland has a long customary pattern of producing high quality indiepop and Paisley’s The Muldoons are no exception to that list. Their sound is drenched in history and tradition from Orange Juice to Camera Obscura, from Postcard to Egg Records and beyond. Their second single, Don’t Be Like That, Girl, is a catchy song featuring jangling guitars and trumpets. I like the way it changes pace during the song catching the listener unaware. I am not sure they needed to cover Echo & The Bunnymen’s The Killing Moon on the flip as the original is a classic and will never … Continue reading The Muldoons – Don’t Be Like That, Girl

The Sweetest Touch/The Wellington – Untitled

Untitled is a split recording between two connected Indonesian bands (shared members?) The Sweetest Touch and The Wellington and both contribute two tracks each. The Sweetest Touch continue their trip down There And Back Again Lane haunted by the ghosts of Sarah Records past. A lazy comparison some might say but it’s still valid as both Answer and Bitter testify. Whilst it may well be a new sound to some I am hoping the 100% adoration with the said label will stop at some point and the band will develop their own sound. That said these are strong tracks especially … Continue reading The Sweetest Touch/The Wellington – Untitled
