September Round Up #3

Something Else – Don’t Want It Jangling guitar pop with post-punk overtones with a bit of pub-rock thrown in too. They have since released their debut album entitled An Entire Album About My Ex-Girlfriend which has been on heavy rotation recently. Facebook Theatre Royal – All Fall Forward/Better Say Goodbye Powerful guitar driven pop from Rochester, Kent linking the Medway sound and psychedelic pop of the 1960’s. Facebook The Radio Dept – Going Down Swinging The Radio Dept. continue their record of releasing anti fascist singles before general elections in their home country given the rise of the right wing … Continue reading September Round Up #3

September Round Up #2

Рыцарь Диких Яблок – Дворец Not sure I am trusting google translate here but the band and recording translate as Palace by Knight of Wild Apples. What I do know is that this is a very fine indiepop EP indeed. Forget the fact this Saint Peterburg based band sing in their native Russian (and why not) and let the music and harmonies do the translating for you. Class. Grab it for free/pay what you want from here. Homepage Ping Pong Club – Sklylight Talking about classy indiepop here is another fine effort from Bandung’s Ping Pong Club that just shines … Continue reading September Round Up #2

The BV’s – Every Story Is A Ghost Story

The BV’s are one of the bands whose output I either love (Ray) or loathe (most of the Interpunktion EP) and they are a bit like The Catherines for me in that respect. However I thought the two recent demos were a step forward and that view is further enhanced with forthcoming single Every Story Is A Ghost Story. Alongside the usual dose of indiepop they have added some noise which sounds so much better here than on the aforementioned EP. Mix that with shoegaze, dreampop, drone and a small inkling of krautrock you get a very fine single indeed. … Continue reading The BV’s – Every Story Is A Ghost Story

The Hannah Barberas – Go Go Hannah Barberas!

Slow Cooked, the lead track on this EP is one of the finest examples of indiepop you might well hear this year. It’s packed to the rafters with all the ingredients that makes a pop song great and I want to play it until the cows come home. Go Go Pepper is another fine track that gives passing glances to the bands obvious indiepop influences. Rather than me list them all here give the track a listen and I am sure you will come to the same conclusions as me to what those influences are. Sadly they fall flat on … Continue reading The Hannah Barberas – Go Go Hannah Barberas!

Nancy Sin – Fall For You

Excellent sounding indiepop just like they used to make in the olden days – okay when I was many, many years younger! The single comprises three high tempo songs that invoke memories of Talulah Gosh, early Soup Dragon and plenty more besides. The title track is a blast! This is their first release since 2015’s debut Room for Rent/Again and Again. Let’s hope they don’t leave it so long next time. Facebook Continue reading Nancy Sin – Fall For You

Summers Gone – A Records I Like Playlist (#1 August 2018)

At one stage I thought I was going to have enough tracks to fill up two to three playlists this month so this one is a bumper crop. As ever click on the image to start. More playlists can be found here and the Playmoss page is here. Continue reading Summers Gone – A Records I Like Playlist (#1 August 2018)

Say Sue Me – Just Joking Around/B-Lover

Excellent double sided new single from Busan’s Say Sue Me. Just Joking Around is a slow burning ballad before suddenly exploding into a frenzy of guitar riffs. Plenty of Pavement and Pale Saint influences on this one. Flip side B-Lover on the other hand is a fuzzy C86 laden affair which sees the band returning to the sound that grabbed me in the first place. Say Sue Me show no signs of letting up whatsoever. Just Joking Around/B-Lover is available as limited edition vinyl plus the usual digital formats. Order it from here. Facebook Continue reading Say Sue Me – Just Joking Around/B-Lover

August Round Up #3

Some Gorgeous Accident – Heaven Sent Heaven Sent certainly isn’t the sound of a band heading towards it’s final destination as their Facebook page indicates but it looks like it’s the end of the road for a band who have been around in one guise or another since 2006/07. These songs are a collection of songs that were “lying about”. This Day and the title track are dreamy and blissful. Available via Melotron Recordings. Facebook Tape Waves – Distant Light More laid back dreamy pop goodness from Tape Waves and the follow up to 2016’s Here To Fade. Whilst it … Continue reading August Round Up #3

August Round Up #1

Value Void – Babeland Babeland is the second track to be taken from the forthcoming Sentimental album which is due for release next month. Unlike previous track Back in the Day which was a nod to the post-punk era Babeland is much more of a jangling affair and very effective it is too. Facebook Our Girl – I really Like It I have just realised that despite including them on a number of playlists I have yet to give Our Girl a written mention on the blog. Let’s rectify that now and mention their new album Stranger Today is due … Continue reading August Round Up #1
