Malaysia’s Mint Cherry have been a bit like Marmite with me. The two singles released last year provided my ears with different reactions. Sail With Me was a perfectly listenable twee/dreampop track but the follow up Stay was a sickly sweet Eton mess of a tune that I still cannot listen too without my teeth falling out!
So what would the new single Carry On sound like? Well to say it’s the Kuala Lumpur based duos finest moment to date would be an understatement. It’s a soaring jangling, indiepop tune that their neighbours across the Strait of Malacca generally excel at. Plenty of retro influences here but given a fresh lick of paint thanks to the synths. Freya’s vocals are a definite plus to their sound and the stay strong message the tune possesses is pretty valid one too. They have set a new benchmark with this one.
