Witterings from an old indie kid
Kimi No Youni Ikiretara seems to be the debut release from Japanese band 宇宙ネコ子 (Space Cat according to Google or is it Universe Nekoko when translated?) and features seven songs that shift from shoegaze, fuzzy pop and indiepop.
With the band being female fronted it’s hard not to suggest bands such as Strawberry Story or Melys as pointers in the band’s sound. Song titles such as Like A Raspberry also suggest a fondness for 1980s UK indie and a certain West Country record label.
Of the seven songs here it’s hard to pick a favourite. However, the fuzzy opener Virgin Suicides and the dream pop explosion of (I’m) Waiting For The Sun are currently on heavy rotation. Additionally, the score like Film and the experimental Flowers suggest the band does not suffer from any constraints musically and they are willing to cross boundaries. A very impressive debut.
