Linda Guilala – Abstinencia

Linda Guilala and Elefant Records raid the excellent Psiconáutica album for yet another single in the shape of Abstinencia. However given that the new song Mucho Más Joven completely blows the a-side away maybe, given that this is just a digital release, it should have been selected as the single instead. Hopefully more new material will be along soon – well once the band get their numerous festival appearances out of the way! Get it digitally from here. Bruising/Personal Best – Split 7″

Two of my favourite discoveries of recent years have joined forces for a forthcoming split 7″ single for the Too Pure singles club. Personal Best give us mishapen guitars and lyrics that bite whilst Bruising take a more romantic approach with a sweeter, candy coated effort. Neither side of the split disappoint and this excellent 7″ is definately one for your valentine! You will need to subscribe to the Too Pure Singles club to get it although it may be available separately at some point in the future. The Personal Best track can be picked up digitally via their Bandcamp … Continue reading Bruising/Personal Best – Split 7″

Something For The Weekend? Three I Meant To Write About….

Three releases that are on my “must write about that” list… Port Sulphur – The Lane Featuring Davy Henderson and Vic Godard. No words can express how great this so I guess that’s why I have avoided writing in detail about it. Just listen! Cayetana – Camp Cope Two tracks from the rapidly improving to these ears Cayetana. Mesa is catchy alt-rock whilst Trails is slower paced which shows off the band’s excellent songwriting. Homepage Facebook Girlfrendo – Demo There is no rush in writing about this one as the songs are over twenty years old. It has been released … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three I Meant To Write About….

Fopmusic – You’re So

You’re So is an upbeat retro synthpop track complete with deadpan post-punk vocals that are almost robotic as the lyrics reel off Lars-Göran Forsberg’s tongue. However it’s the End Of Party RMX by Synths Versus Me that really grabs me sounding like an updated version of Blackbelt Andersen’s classic track Tyrkisk Pepper. Just when you think it’s going to be vocal free they fade in for the last couple of minutes to great effect. Make no mistake, this is Coldwave for the dancefloor. I like….. Out now digitally via Oráculo Records Soundcloud Bandcamp Continue reading Fopmusic – You’re So

Herlights – Le Passé

Not sure what has put the spring in Herlights steps but there is plenty of vibrancy on the three tracks that comprise Le Passé. Like the previous release, the vocals are hushed, some barely making it past a whisper but the driving synths and guitars lead these excellent dream pop tracks home. Le Passé could well be your soundtrack on your journey along the road to the stars. Yours for a mere dollar from Bandcamp. Facebook Continue reading Herlights – Le Passé

Loners – Phantom/Stay

Two fine slabs of excellent instrumental dreampop/indiepop for you today courtesy of, new to me, Loners. This is blissful stuff with both tracks quickly grabbing my attention and I soon wane to everything else around me. Stay reminds me of a hundred different things yet maintains it’s originality whilst Phantom sounds like the perfect start and/or end to every mixtape (erm sorry playlist) you have ever made. Available, as ever, on bandcamp. I have been investigating further and Honey, taken from the recent album Happy People II, is as beautiful a track as you are likely to hear in 2017. … Continue reading Loners – Phantom/Stay

Candybomber – Not Completely Sure

Not Completely Sure is the debut single from Australian based Candybomber who feature Stewart from The Kensingtons in their ranks. It has got everything a great pop song needs: Fuzzy jangling guitars – check! Catchy vocals – check! Singalong lyrics – check! No wonder it has been stuck in my head for a few days now. I am looking forward to the full EP which is due for release in April but in the meantime go and get the track from Bandcamp on a pay what you want basis. Facebook Continue reading Candybomber – Not Completely Sure

Secret Cameras – It Doesn’t Matter

It Doesn’t Matter by Secret Cameras is the second single to be taken from a full EP that is due for release in March. To these ears, the mix of synthpop and indie gives It Doesn’t Matter a retro vibe whether it’s from 1980’s or via revivalists in the noughties. Itamar Starets vocals are pretty impressive and whilst the song overall has an art-rock feel it’s not trying to be too clever about it either unlike others who have trod the path before. It Doesn’t Matter is out now digitally from all the usual places including Bandcamp. The band will be launching the … Continue reading Secret Cameras – It Doesn’t Matter

Something For The Weekend? Three from La Vida Es Un Mus Discos

Get ready to pogo this weekend…. Hackney based punk label La Vida Es Un Mus Discos were one of my discoveries of last year and I picked up a few releases from them. They source punk from all over the globe and these three releases will soon be added to last years additions. Rata Negra – Oído Absoluto Debut album from Spanish punk band Rata Negra. No idea what they are singing about but the songs sound great and verge on the poppier side of punk. Available digitally from either the label and band. I think there will be a … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three from La Vida Es Un Mus Discos

New Today – Cuts & B-Side

Two slabs of contrasting post-punk tracks from New Today who themselves are a collaboration between Casuistry and Two One Six so understandably both bands influences are prevalent on these tracks. Cuts is a goth-tinged synthpop track that would find favour with fans of Alien Sex Fiend and Clan of Xymox whilst Let Me Loose, which is my pick of the two, edges closer to the likes of Joy Division, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and Bauhaus. Available on a pay what you want basis from bandcamp. Continue reading New Today – Cuts & B-Side
