Iris – Away

Some shoegaze from Toronto today. Iris follow up last years excellent self titled EP with new track Away. It starts off in a dream pop vein before escaping the shackles and soars amongst shimmering guitars and drums that penetrate through the song’s intense sound. The best bit comes towards the end as the ethereal female vocals join in urging the song towards it’s climax. A keeper for sure. Facebook Continue reading Iris – Away

Foundlings – Your Sister

London’s Foundlings, who are rockin’ harder than a nut roast (their words not mine), released two digital singles back in March and I have finally managed to scratch them both off my must listen too list. Whilst I enjoyed the rockier and unpolished sound of Misery it’s the more melodic Your Sister that I have been coming back to thanks to the catchy, infectious jangling guitars coupled with front woman Amber’s excellent vocals. Whilst their music obviously draws a lot from 1980’s influences they remind me of the now inactive Sky Larkin. Whether it’s the eighties or the noughties that … Continue reading Foundlings – Your Sister

Glaze – Daisy

I thought I was tuning into the indie section of the chart show when watching this video given it’s vintage look and sound. Fusing shoegaze and indie dance Daisy sounds like Chapterhouse going up against some baggy chancers. It’s a pretty effective tune and one for any indie dj’s playlist. Available digitally from here. Facebook Continue reading Glaze – Daisy

Gizpel – No Surrender

Judging by their band photo Gizpel not only have a love of English football but the UK post punk scene too. Unlike many of their peers who pay homage to all things Sarah Records Gizpel’s music veers towards the early 1980’s indiepop sounds that was found on labels such as Rough Trade, Cherry Red, Factory et al. The likes of The Wake and The Monochrome Set certainly spring to my mind on the first listens. Grab it from here. Facebook Continue reading Gizpel – No Surrender

Randy Jupiter – Space Boy

Another day and more jangle pop. Canadian’s Randy Jupiter deliver two slices of jangling indiepop tracks which are not too far away of what The Death of Pop have been doing for a couple of years now. I am loving the slow melodic jangle on Hypersped whilst Big on U goes for it big time. Excellent! Download for nowt from here (or give them some dosh on a pay what you want basis). Compilation Week – TBTCI Dives Into Asian Sounds

The Blog That Celebrates Itself Records (TBTCI) specialises in producing compilation tribute album whether to an artist, label or even part of the world. This latest compilation is a roundup of the Asian Scene and includes both covers as well as new or recent original recordings. Musically the album contains indiepop, shoegaze and dreampop. Standout tracks come from Indonesian noise pop outfit See The Eye, Chinese Shoegazers Dear Eloise and Jaapn’s Fluffytails with a gorgeous cover of Lemon’s Chair’s SWallowtail. However Indonesian post-punk outfit Pullo win it for me Round The Bed complete with Ian Curtis style vocals. It’s a … Continue reading Compilation Week – TBTCI Dives Into Asian Sounds

Compilation Week – El Sonido Del Río Hablador (Vol.1)

El Sonido Del Río Hablador (Vol.1) is a twenty track compilation of Peruvian indiepop recordings from 2000-2009 which is well worth investigating. Some of these tracks are pretty raw, some are too bloody twee and some may not even meet the purists idea of what indiepop actually is. However, the further we head into the track listing the quality gets better and there is much to enjoy such as the Field Mice inspired Moon Over Soho, Numen’s excellent Losing You, Ambarina’s dreamy Tambourine and the instrumental Noodles At Bingo’s by Callahan. Highlight for me though is Agnes dice by Subterráneos … Continue reading Compilation Week – El Sonido Del Río Hablador (Vol.1)

Compilation Week – Chiaroscuro. Italogaze 2018

Italian labels Seashell Records and Vipchoyo Sound Factory have come together to produce this compilation which gathers 13 new tracks from the Italian underground shoegazing scene. Whilst bands such as Stella Diana, Mary’s Restless Dream and RevRevRev were previously known to me the majority aren’t and this is a good starting point for the scene which has been affectionately labelled as Italogaze. And of the bands who I haven’t heard previously? I really enjoyed the post-punk meets shoegaze vibes of Electric Floor with I Made It Up whilst Klam, who have been around since 2012, delight with the quirky Begging … Continue reading Compilation Week – Chiaroscuro.
