eGGs – eGGs

eGGs are a Parisian indiepop four piece and this is their second release, with the same name, also on Howlin Banana Records! There are two tracks. The first A Certain Smile has more hooks than a fishing competition, mixing indie pop with psychedelia and then some. The chorus, as with the vocals throughout, is/are addictive listening. The second song, Picture Book, has a swirling organ sound with a 1960s garage pop feel. Close your eyes and you can imagine a kaleidoscope of colours to accompany the music. Er just me then! These are two excellent songs that deserved to be … Continue reading eGGs – eGGs

Soft Blue Shimmer – Nothing Happens Here

Los Angles based Soft Blue Shimmer have got the title of this release wrong because there is plenty happening on their debut EP! Encompassing most, if not all spheres, of both dreampop and shoegaze the five tracks here range from the ethereal to noisy. The vocals are careful, delivered gradually as the guitars twist and warp. The blissful Dream Beam Supreme is my pick of the bunch but here is plenty more here/hear to excite! The Nothing Happens Here EP is available on cassette and digital formats from the band’s bandcamp page. Facebook Continue reading Soft Blue Shimmer – Nothing Happens Here

Shoe Shine Six – Cold Sun

Cold Sun brings together Yekaterinburg based Shoe Shine Six with Kyoto outfit Tip Top Nap whose vocalist Natsumi Yamamoto contributes to the words and sings alongside the host band’s Anna Lapina. It’s a shining example of dreampop with strong, dominant female vocals accompanying the vibrating guitar as the song swirls in unabashed abandon. Impressive. TV Crime – Man In The Pub

Nottingham glam punks TV Crime release their debut long player Metal Town in September. It includes their previous singles including the brilliant debut Hooligans. Man In The Pub is the first new song to be previewed and it’s packed to the rafters with punk attitude and pub rock riffs. Play loud and party like it’s 1977. Metal Town is available on vinyl from Berlin’s Alien Snatch! or digitally from the band. Continue reading TV Crime – Man In The Pub

The Records I Like Mix July 2019

A new mix compiling tracks from the past month or so. Plenty of C86 influenced music this time alongside the usual mix of shoegaze, janglepop and alt-rock. Full Tracklisting: Death Of Heather – Mind It’s a song that features slow simmering guitars that echo profoundly alongside hushed vocals which sing of someone who isn’t out of mind but yet isn’t here or there. The Proctors – Letters To The Girl And what a belter we have on our hands, well ears! Jangling guitars, catchy boy/girl vocals and a melody to die for. Holy Now – It Will All End In Tears … Continue reading The Records I Like Mix July 2019

Red Sleeping Beauty – Tonight EP

Red Sleeping Beauty lift Tonight as a single (are there any more tracks left on Stockholm?) and it’s another example of a pleasing pop track with joint vocals and synths that echo throughout. Mind you second track Someone Somewhere should have been the single. It’s melodies are as catchy as a dose of the catchiest flu and the vocals continue to delight as the song progresses. The band get back to their original indiepop roots with a cover of Emma’s House originally by the Field Mice. Starting of in a sedate manner it slowly morphs into a piece of eletronica. … Continue reading Red Sleeping Beauty – Tonight EP

The Popguns – Carrying The Fire EP

The Popguns have built upon the two tracks they submitted to WIAIWYA for their recent The Moon And Back – One Small Step For Global Pop compilation celebrating the 50th anniversary of the The Apollo 11 Moon landings (or did they eh, eh?) for this new EP – or Space Operetta as the band say. Both of the aforementioned contributed tracks are here and one, the title track with it’s title lifted from astronaut Michael Collins’ autobiography, is a rousing guitar driven track asking “are you ready to go…….one step” which is sung singer Wendy Pickles in a raucous manner. … Continue reading The Popguns – Carrying The Fire EP
