Sicayda – It Changed

It Changed is the first in a series of single drops before the band release their next EP or album. It’s a track that was written a couple of years ago and despite not appearing on their debut EP the band write that it’s a “fan favorite” and they “finally feel it has reached its full potential as a song”. I can see why it ‘s a favourite as it’s a feisty track mixing post-punk and shoegaze to great effect whilst the energetic vocals give the song another dynamic. Rousing and pleasing! UK Indiepop 2019

The UK indiepop revival that peaked a few years backed seem to have died out so I asked this question on Twitter the other day and it sparked a lot of chat and replies. Thanks to everyone who was involved. A number of the replies mentioned bands featured on this blog in the past whilst there were a lot of names that were new to me. I am not sure that some of the former met the criteria but as indiepop has a pretty wide ranging sound it seems to be a good idea to include them. So, with all … Continue reading UK Indiepop 2019

No Middle Name – Meet The Folks

I must admit I have not listened to No Middle Name since 2017’s Fondness album and their name cropped up again on a twitter thread recently. They released a two part single last month in the shape of Meet The Folks and it’s retro sounding indiepop telling the tale of meeting the other half’s parents, delusions, fallout and the inevitable break up. The vocals of Lucy Martin on part one are a delight and the way she sings the response to David Bailey’s spoken narrative on part two are somewhat wrenching. They make the tuneful guitars seem like a bonus. … Continue reading No Middle Name – Meet The Folks

Lemondaze – Neon Ballroom

Originally from Cambridge but now based in London Lemondaze have been gigging for a couple of years now. Neon Ballroom is the band’s debut single and I guess all that gigging has paid off as this is a blistering effort. There is more than a nod to the the shoegazers of years past but there are also elements of those bands who followed prior to the Britpop explosion. Someone on Bandcamp makes reference to Bleach and that’s not a bad shout. If you like your shoegaze intense and noisy then Neon Ballroom should be right up your street. Facebook Continue reading Lemondaze – Neon Ballroom

Wake In June – OBE // OBE

Italian one man indiepop/bedroom pop band, and regulars on the stereo at Records I Like, Wake In June have a new single out. Entitled OBE // OBE it’s an indiepop track that features the now trademark jangling guitar sound which leads from the front relegating the obscured vocals to the back. The lyrics are a puzzle just like the gaming theme that runs through the song. Insert more coins now ……. Instagram Continue reading Wake In June – OBE // OBE

Teen Idle – Dreaming

Teen Idle, aka New Jersey based Sara Barry, has been playing the guitar and singing since she was nine and started posting her work to Bandcamp in July 2018. Dreaming is the first work of hers I have heard and I hope it will not be the last. It’s a gentle, dreamy song that glides it’s way over a gentle guitar sound as Barry mournfully sings the somber words contained within. Sometimes sad, sometimes lovely but either way you look at it Dreaming is a great song which is ideal for listening in the diminishing light as the rain falls … Continue reading Teen Idle – Dreaming

All Romantic Days – May I Waste Your Time

Chengdu based All Romantic Days feature members of shoegazing band Sound and Fury. However what we hear on this, their debut EP, is not the shoegazing sound one would expect but four pretty good indiepop tracks instead. The EP opens with Sleepwear which wrong footed me with the male lead vocals. Personally I prefer a female voice when the songs err on the twee side of things but this is a good track that reminds me of Brazilian indiepop band Pale Sunday. The expected female vocals appear on She Says with the voice and jangling guitars giving the song a … Continue reading All Romantic Days – May I Waste Your Time

Pop At Summer – Chamomile Rhymes

Pop at Summer hail from Bandung, Indonesia and are another band who continue that city & country’s obsession with indiepop. Unlike some of their peers the band do not replicate Sarah Records note for note and instead produce a mature indie pop sound centered around the voice of their female singer (Givani?). Imagine Strawberry Story fronted by Tracey Thorn and that may give you some clues. The band also cite Swedish pop as an influence but I also hear bits of swing and classical guitar in the mix too. Three very strong tracks with closer Everything’s Fine being my pick … Continue reading Pop At Summer – Chamomile Rhymes
