bdrmm – A Reason To Celebrate (GLOK Remix)

I described the original version of A Reason To Celebrate as “a blistering track that alternates between alt-rock, shoegaze and has a bit of a Brit-pop swagger about its person too”. GLOK, who is Andy Bell from Ride, removes the brash sounding guitar, replacing them with Kosmische influenced beats which enhance the vocals. Bell does an excellent good job and removes from my mind all the horrors of late 1980s, early 1990s two a penny remixes of “indie” bands in one swoop. I would go one step further and say this version actually surpasses the original. Facebook Continue reading bdrmm – A Reason To Celebrate (GLOK Remix)

Hater – Sift

Swedish band Hater are currently working on the follow up to 2018’s Siesta longplayer. Sift was originally recorded in order for the band to support their now postponed US tour with the Radio Dept. – wow, that would have been great. The band have always had a dark side to them and that’s evident on Sift which is a brooding, melancholic track. Indiepop at it’s most epic – and sullen! Facebook Continue reading Hater – Sift

Something For The Weekend? Three Liked By Others

This week’s pack of three are acts who have appeared more than once on another blog, mix, Bandcamp feed or podcast that I follow. Pizza Daddy – Too Many Boyfriends Thankfully Too Many Boyfriends is a far better song than the name of this project, which is comprised of members from the band BOYs, suggests. The track itself is dreamy indie with a catchy chorus. A fine pop song indeed. Free Ice Cream – Free Ice Cream Talking about pop music Atlanta’s Free Ice Cream have got lo-fi indiepop down to a tee. Catchy and witty songs, regardless whether they … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Three Liked By Others

Jimmy Knows – Pilot

Jimmy Knows are a new band from Athens (Greece) and comprise of Giannis Vranas (Vocals & Guitar), Nikos Anagnostopoulos (Guitar & Backing Vocals), Kimon Shot (Bass Guitar) and Jason Gavalas (Drums). Pilot will be their debut release. The track itself reminds me of that art school sound that ranged from Josef K to Franz Ferdinand. Pilot, which is backed with Eye Of The Storm, will be released via the Old Bad Habits label on June 29th June 2020. You can pre-order it here in limited edition 7″ solid cream vinyl and digital formats. Facebook Continue reading Jimmy Knows – Pilot

Prepare My Glider – Smokesong

Canadian Shoegazers Prepare My Glider announced they have a long-player in the offering. Smokesong is the first track to lifted from the as-yet-untitled album and given the references to Ride, My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive on the Bandcamp page you may have some expectations on how this track sounds. However, rather than being a fully-fledged shoegazing track, Smokesong heads back to the earlier times of ethereal wave namely 4AD artists like The Cocteau Twins. It’s a wonderfully executed mixing reverb-laden guitars, otherworldly vocals and subtle, ambient passages. It’s backed with a demo of No Early Warning which dives deep into … Continue reading Prepare My Glider – Smokesong

The Churchhill Garden – We Can Dream

We Can Dream is the latest track by Andy Jossi and his longtime collaborator Krissy Vanderwoude. It originally appeared on the Songs from Quarantine compilation which was released last month. The song, which was the highlight of the aforementioned compilation for me, is a gentle affair highlighting the subtle guitars, thoughtful words and that voice. Beautiful. Baby Blue – Care Comp.

Baby Blue is a label based in New York. I discovered this three-track EP, with contributions from acts from that city, whilst searching for Miserable Chillers following their appearance on the recent Join A Comp! release. They open this EP with Little House, which sounds like a song the Penguin Cafe Orchestra could have made if they were a twee pop band. Nuns Honey is a new name on me and I enjoyed the bedroom indiepop that their contribution Up Down delivered. Catchy vocals too. The final track by Monekybars started off as a laid back synthpop track before morphing … Continue reading Baby Blue – Care Comp.
