Mo Dotti – Blurring EP

Following on from a couple of preview tracks Los Angles based Mo Dotti have released their debut EP. Titled Blurring it features five tracks of ethereal shoegaze that sounds like it has come straight out of the 4AD back catalogue namely Lush and The Pale Saints. That’s not a bad starting point to be fair and the band’s shimmering shoegaze sound takes me back decades it has to be said. The voice of Gina Negrini is a delight and in my imagination, I can drift off high into the clouds whilst listening to this lovely, but sometimes, forlorn, EP. The … Continue reading Mo Dotti – Blurring EP

Luces Negras – Ventilador

Another day and another virtual trip to Barcelona. We last heard Luces Negras on their self titled debut EP back in October 2018 and the indie rock found on Ventilador is well worth the wait. Grungy garage guitars in the style of The Breeders (yep a lazy comparison – sorry!) dominate over the words which when translated seem quite happy and joyful but I am wondering if they have a darker meaning. That’s most probably a case of over thinking unlike hitting the play button continuously. Instagram Continue reading Luces Negras – Ventilador

Eterna Joventut – Tu Amor

Tu Amor, the second track from Barcelona based Eterna Joventut, is their reinterpretation of the song Heat and Shame originally performed by Mujeres in 2012. No I haven’t heard it either so a bit of digging on Bandcamp led me to the original. It’s a garage punk track and, despite Mujeres coming from the same aforementioned city, their male vocalist sang in English. However the female fronted cover sees some changes. They mix the garage of the original with some jangling indiepop vibes whilst singing in Spanish. It’s a good track being both a testament to the cover and the … Continue reading Eterna Joventut – Tu Amor

The Suncharms/Mirrorlakes – A Split Tape

Indonesian label Shiny Happy Records have just released a split tape which features three tracks each from The Suncharms and Mirrorlakes. Since I have never mentioned Sheffield based indie band The Suncharms before I best set the scene! The band was originally active between 1989-1993 but eventually reformed after releasing a compilation on Cloudberry Records in 2016. They played their first gig in almost 24 years in 2017 and a single on Slumberland was released the following year. The band have also appeared on a couple of compilations including last Novembers F.A.R. OUT on Fadeawayradiate Records. Last Halloween they also … Continue reading The Suncharms/Mirrorlakes – A Split Tape

In My Tribe – I’ll Bring You Joy

In My Tribe is the Popguns frontwoman Wendy Pickles. I’ll Bring You Joy was originally written by her for the Joy Choir Collective in Hove. This version has been recorded, in home lockdown during April, in order to raise funds for RISE which is a Brighton & Hove based charity which supports people affected by domestic abuse. It’s a vital service, of even greater value during the Covid-19 crisis. It’s a beautiful song for a worthwhile cause. You can get the song from here. Additionally you can sponsor Wendy at JustGiving. Relay Tapes – Early Morning Abstract

Early Morning Abstract from Brisbane’s Relay Tapes is the follow up to 2018’s Semblance EP. The band delve into a range of influences ranging from ambient to shoegaze in order to create a range of really strong songs. The ambient opener Theme 42 has some drone textures woven in whilst In The Ground opens with some kosmische sounds, slowly building with layers of repetition but without any negativity attached. It was Planetarium with it’s blend of drone, shimmering guitars and low audible female vocals that finally turned me onto the band in a big way whilst Dream Colour is a … Continue reading Relay Tapes – Early Morning Abstract

Uniforms – Eugenesia

Spanish band Uniforms have just released their new song Eugenesia. It is the second single to be taken from the forthcoming album Fantasía Moral which is due to be released later this year. In contrast to their previous single Casi Famosas which was a poppy affair Eugenesia is a blend of melodic alt-rock and dreampop. The band state the song gave them some headaches but not for us as we get a bouncy track with vocals floating nicely alongside the harmonies. And it finishes with a nice long hazy fade-out to boot. What headache? Facebook Continue reading Uniforms – Eugenesia

Various Artists – Join A Comp!

You wait yonks for a decent indiepop compilation then two turn up in a row! Hot on the heels of the Impermeable Records C19 compilation Fadeawayradiate Records have just issued Join A Comp!. Despite countries slowly opening up as a result of the covid virus the label writes that “there are still no venue events, festivals and gigs. I thought it would be fun and also good exposure for bands to do a compilation”. Hard to argue with that. Like the aforementioned compilation there is plenty here that you may (I hope!) read about on these pages. So where to … Continue reading Various Artists – Join A Comp!

Audiobaton – Wonder

Wonder, the follow up to last October’s Where You Are EP, from Dallas based Audiobaton is another slice of fuzzy noise pop with a few shoegazing tinges here and there. Despite the band coming from across the pond I hear a lot of UK influences on the track especially from bands who were prevalent between 1989-1991 as shoegazing was fading away whilst grunge bands were emerging and the early foundations of Brit-pop were being laid. One for playing loud! Facebook Continue reading Audiobaton – Wonder
