Spoon God – Dead Hipsters

French act Spoon God have been around for a few years now and this brand new EP seems to be their first release since 2014. They make music which transcends genres and on this EP you can hear everything from drone to Krautrock or alt-rock to post-punk. I must confess I found some of the tracks hard to get into at first but there are some here that grow worthy of your ears attention such as the coldwave inspired The Real Thrill (666 Queer Cult) and Seventeen which slow burns with pulsing guitars. However the title track stands out for … Continue reading Spoon God – Dead Hipsters

Something For The Weekend? Shoegaze Variations

This weeks pack of three features three new Shoegazing tracks with variations on a theme. Misty Coast – Backseat Warriors Norwegian outfit and the wonderfully named Misty Coast described themselves as Melodaze. Made up of two members of Megaphonic Thrift they have released a number of tracks since 2016 with Backseat Warriors being the latest. There are some lovely sounds here mixed with shimmering guitars and female ethereal vocals. Shoegaze to chill too. Facebook Rusted Satellites – Constellations (Demo) Constellations is the sound of a psychedelic and spiritual variant of shoegaze. The lyrics are poignant and vocals are sublime. It’s … Continue reading Something For The Weekend? Shoegaze Variations

Newscaster – Rumours

Plenty of weird and wonderful sounds inhabit the two tracks that can be found on this experimental sounding release. There is art-pop, post-punk, dub, psychedelia and even a bit of drone/krautrock. The music invokes memories of the likes of Can, Talking Heads, Scritti Politti and XTC. If that is the effect Newscaster are after then they are spot on. Interesting to say the least. I like. Black Sand – Endless Blue

Do you remember Spacemen 3? Black Sand do right down to the reverb drenched music, the song titles and the lyrics that refer to religion and other pursuits. Even his profile pic reminds me of Pete Kember! And do you know what else Black Sand has in common with Spacemen 3? They (well he) also make bloody fantastic spaced out and trippy psychedelic tunes that could drone on and on as far as I am concerned. To say I am impressed is an understatement and it’s another one of those complete discography purchases for me! Lie down, relax and take … Continue reading Black Sand – Endless Blue

Stolen Badges – Places I’ve Been

Stolen Badges is a one-off project by Ryan Marquez of Apple Orchard and more recently Golden Teardrops. Unlike the latter, which leaned towards baroque pop, Stolen Badges sound has more of a stripped down shoegazing feel. Musically it also started to sound like a less psychedelic version of Spacemen 3 especially on James Bay and San Francisco. It’s interesting stuff and shame the project is only a one off as there are plenty of ideas here which would have been worth pursuing further. Continue reading Stolen Badges – Places I’ve Been

Alles Club – Décollage

Quite a journey this one which crosses the borders of shoegaze, post rock and dream pop whilst on it’s travels. The instrumental title track opens the proceedings with post rock guitars merged with voices recorded from the TV or radio. It blends into another eight minute plus track in the shape of Quanto Tempo which has a poppier sound spruced with some trumpets. Despite not sounding like it, it is effective and works amazingly well! Sadly our ride comes off the rails with the well meaning but ultimately unsatisfying Libélula. It’s a slight break with 1990’s alt-rock sounding effort on … Continue reading Alles Club – Décollage

Singles Going Steady……

Another round up of singles and EP’s for your listening pleasure…… Blushing – The Truth / Sunshine The first single to be taken from dreampoppers Blushing’s debut album due for release early next year. The flip side Sunshine is a shimmering delight in the way Lush sounded when they first emerged many moons ago. Get your vinyl copy of the single from here. Facebook The Hannah Barberas – No Mystery EP Another fine EP from the fans of Jessica Fletcher. It’s more consistent than the debut EP and I really like the Throwing Muses like Spellbound. The EP is currently … Continue reading Singles Going Steady……

September Round Up #1

I returned home after a week away to a bursting at the seams bandcamp inbox on top of those songs/band I have yet to write about or give a mention too. Here is the first of a number of posts trying to rectify that! Foundlings – Horizons Another fine slice of 1990’s tinged melodic guitar pop from London’s Foundlings. It’s their finest moment yet! Facebook The Angel Makers – Sam and Sara I mentioned the lead track from this EP back in June and I am glad to hear that this EP carries on in pretty much the same vein. … Continue reading September Round Up #1
