The Fireworks – Dream About You

The Fireworks release their new single Dream About You next week. It’s also their first material with new vocalist Beth Arzy (Trembling Blue Stars/Lightning in a Twilight Hour/The Luxembourg Signal). Thankfully the change of singer does not affect the band’s brand of fuzzy, sometimes noisy, indie pop. All three tracks here are corkers but it’s Better Without You Now that stands out for me especially given its retro sound and the joint girl/boy vocals shining throughout. Red Rosie – Red Roses

A bit tongue twister this one if you say the band name and song title too fast. Two versions of the same song here. The EP mix is the rawer of the two being somewhat noisy with shouty female vocals whilst the single version is scaled down musically with the instruments shining through. Additionally, the vocals are more harmonious with both male/female voices being both gentle and dominant at the same time. It’s a win-win situation and I cannot wait to hear more. Something For The Weekend? Three from Kosmonaut

Kosmonaut, the band who feature ex-members of Bulldozer Crash, have released records their singles on esteemed labels such as Matinee Recordings, Firestation and Cloudberry Records. Kamikaze Girls – Berlin

Berlin is the first single to be taken from the forthcoming debut album from the Kamikaze Girls entitled Seafoam. It didn’t grab me in the the same way as Hexes or Stiches from last years SAD single but their brand of shouty noise pop/riot grrrl is always going to win me over in the end. Slugger – Stay Loose

Possibly the first ever release I have bought from an artist who hails from Dorking but this EP isn’t a bad place to start. There are four tracks covering a mix of post-punk, lo-fi and DIY noise pop complete with scowling vocals that sometimes sound like they are sprawled in their delivery. Trails is my pick of the bunch here but to be fair there is not a filler track across the whole EP. Worth a listen as it February’s Barb EP. Get it from Bandcamp. Something For The Weekend? Forthcoming Releases

This week’s pack of three focuses on three forthcoming releases to keep an ear out for. Peaness – Seafoam Islands The flip side of the new single due for release at the end of this month on Oddbox Records. Young Romance – Another’s Blood After what seemed like aeons Young Romance finally released their debut album at the back end of last month.
